I remember liking this when I was a teenager but as an adult this just reads like poorly disguised Outlander fanfic. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but the main heroine who kept being described as “feisty” kept coming off as meek and whimpy. The writing was fine, but the characters annoyed me. 2.5 ⭐
Suckered by a pretty cover but this historical fiction hid christian vibes. At about 20% of the story, I saw where this was going. At 50% I was very annoyed. At 85% I am thoroughly done with this author. 100% I'm not touching another one of her books. I'm sorry. I'm atheist and all this is just...grr.
I admit, the writing is good. The first 20% had me hooked, even, and I was invested and then came the River Nile turned red and I immediately searched the book on Google and saw this is christian (stop capitalizing the word autocorrect!) fiction, I went “Fine. I can read out of my comfort zone. It won't kill me.”
Guys, this. Was. Torture.
I'm not getting into a rant. The writing was good it has a pretty gorgeous cover, so I'm giving this 2 ⭐. It had so much potential. Oh well. Onto the next book!
I really wanted to like this so much more than I did. I could appreciate what the author wrote, some lines were quite good, but I struggled with it keeping my attention and I didn't overly care for the characters. The setting was good but the mystery felt a bit flat for me. Perhaps that's my fault in that I've been reading mysteries for a long time. But this showed promise and I'm glad I have the second book at the library to dive into. 3.5 ⭐
