I must be one of the off ones out. I read this through the Internet Archive as it's only 80 pages and a fast read. The Spanish wasn't too difficult nor was the writing style as it's in the form of a play. A simple storyline but an interesting one. I didn't care for how Carmen treated Ama, and while it was a good play it didn't fully capture my interest. I read because it was short and I know this is important for undocumented Americans but I just couldn't get fully into it. 2.5 ⭐ rounded up.
Actual rating 3.5 ⭐ rounded up. I half liked this and can appreciate what the author was attempting to do here but it felt not quite there. I don't know if what it was about this book but it just felt like it was missing something. Regardless this was still a great read and had a happy ending. But not for the land. It still hungers for

A bit slow at points in the middle but as I finally read my first Clifford D. Simak book, I can definitely see how he's gotten so much hype over the years past. This was captivating and intriguing. Enoch was a fascinating character and there's just the right amount of mystery to keep you turning the pages. I liked the characters, the way it slowly built up and the whole story was just fun to read. A solid 4 ⭐!
The cover lured me in, I'm not gonna lie. It's a very pretty cover that spoke of a dark haunting atmosphere and this book just... wasn't quite there? This read more like a kinda murder mystery than haunting island tale, almost and while it was good I just wasn't as enthused as I'd hoped to be. 3.5 ⭐.
