In this picture book, illustrator Raoul Deleo takes on his alter ego as an 19th century explorer, but never addresses his audience directly. It's the fictional character (is it?) Noah Stern, who comes across his accounts of three expeditions to Terra Ultima, an undiscovered continent with it's strange wildlife. The drawings are exceptional and the layout is perfect as a coffee table book, but it's the story around the drawings that makes your first read an entire read.
This book is about Walt. His life, his work, his projects and his dreams. Everything is presented in small chapters with great info and unique photos and illustrations. But hidden throughout the book are some small treasures, replicas of tickets, letters, drawings, animation cells, invitations and maps. Who else than Robert Tieman, archives manager at Walt Disney Archives from 1990 to 2010, could create such a treasure of a book. I'm still reading this once in a while and it's such a joy to take out these small replicas, which help you realize even more how special the life of Walt Disney was.
Jazz records album art from the 50s and the 60s mainly. Available in two sizes and I bought the record size version. Really nice, because a lot of pages have original size art on them. Other ones only have two or three small pictures (a bit too small). I was hoping to find more info on the artwork itself, it's there, but short. It has to be, because every comment is in English, German and French. The reason I really dislike these multi langual versions. Maybe they better left some artwork out, because not everything is that great or relevant. Also it's missing some really important covers (not because of their music, but because of their design). In the end, it's not about the music, it's about the artwork and it seems they forgot that when creating this book.

De first half of the book was really good. It actually helped me to understand the story better, although I read the book, seen the movies. Very well done. The characters are a bit expressionless, they have this uncanny look. I didn't like the coloring and I first thought I had a miss print. Bought the e-Book....exactly the same. I also noticed that the Dutch translation is not that good after reading the English version, do the last one is recommended.
Second half the I got annoyed with all these thoughts of every character. It seemed like they didn't talk anymore and the story had to be explained by what everybody was thinking. Probably the best solution to keep it short, but still.... I hope the second book will be better.
Beklemmend, ondanks dat het tekstueel niet super krachtig is en vooral in het begin nog niet echt wil pakken.
Het tekenwerk is meedogenloos, elk venster een kunstwerk op zich. De verhaallijn is echter langdradig en soms erg verwarrend. Het had echt een stuk korter gekund. Het had beter geweest wat stukken, hoe zonde dat ook is, eruit te knippen.
Mooi en schrijnend tegelijkertijd. Het naschrift is een korte ‘making of' en verklaart een hoop.
Wat me duidelijk was: een man met een gekwelde geest gaat de wildernis in van Japan om met zichzelf in het reine te komen na een verschrikkelijk voorval. Wat volgde was 147 bladzijdes aan vaagheid. De teksten zijn losstaande diepzinnige zinnen, die elke keer weer hetzelfde zeggen “ik voel me leeg “. Het geheel heeft me totaal niet emotioneel betrokken gemaakt. Het deed me echt niets. De illustraties zijn best ok, mooie opmaak en inkleuring, maar af en toe komt het perspectief niet goed uit de verf. Sommige stukken zijn langdradig door teveel vensters te gebruiken en soms had er juist nog een extra venster tussen geplaatst kunnen worden. Verder is het mij allemaal gewoon echt te vaag en moet jezelf teveel invullen. Misschien dat het bij een tweede lezing allemaal wat duidelijker zou worden voor me, maar ik heb de behoefte niet omdat nog een keer te doen.
I read this book after “Running with the Devil” by Noel Monk. It's like Sammy took off where Noel ended. Really enjoyable, although the writing style was really poor “.and then.....and then......and then” You know what I mean, but still great read.
Really insightful of how the music industry worked at that time and what a façade Van Halen was from the outside. Not a high flyer, but read it in one read. I can recommend the audio book version.
De Jongh's best work till so far, for me one of the best graphic novels I have read. The story, the drawings, the coloring, the research....it's all perfect, but at no cost of emotional impact. It seems she did the research, writing, drawing, coloring all by herself. Which is already an achievement in itself. I like especially the way she thought out how scenes were presented in the space of every page. It changes your reading speed and how every scene is interpreted. A classic to be!
A book about decisions and deals. In this case billion dollar deals regarding Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and 20th century fox. That makes it interesting. What hit me that at crucial points Mr Iger didn't put his emotions aside.
Leest als een short movie. Aimee weet de sfeer zo prachtig uit te beelden en uit te drukken, alsof je samen met haar op de achterbank zit. Beetje abrupt einde en ietwat zwakke epiloog.
In het begin irriteerde de schrijfstijl mij: overdreven deftig vocabulaire, afgewisseld met banale Jan Wolkers-achtige vrijscènes en Simon Carmiggelt-achtige typetjes. Ik wilde het bijna wegleggen, maar ben blij dat ik heb doorgelezen. Aan het einde was ik zowaar ontroerd. Heb er wel een soort van ‘antitoerisme'-houding aan overgehouden. Maar goed, die is daarentegen ook weer hypocriet ;-)
Inderdaad prachtig tekenwerk en origineel verhaal tegen de juiste historische achtergrond. De ontknoping maakt alleen wat minder bij me los en voelt wat afgeraffeld aan. Had beter een vervolg op kunnen komen.
Mooi artwork en daarvoor wel de moeite. Verhaallijn is vaag, met onbevredigend einde en vreemde sprongen.
Als je nog nooit een beeldroman hebt gelezen, is dit een prima boek om mee te beginnen. Probleem is wel dat dit één van de betere is, zowel de verhaallijn als het tekenwerk, en alles hierna wat zal tegenvallen.

Production Value: This books shows how these kind of documents need to be done. Well organized, beautiful artwork presented in the right way (sometimes small and sometimes two pages wide), perfect design and right alteration between text and artwork.
Cover: Sets the right expectations and really got me to walk over from the other side of a book store

Appeal: Having played these games as a kid, you get to relive it, but never got to appreciate all the artwork at that time

Buy, borrow or bury: Definitely a must-have. Not only if you love the eighties (foreword by Ernest Cline is a no brainer), but also are into game design, illustrations and fontdesign

Het verhaal is best aardig, hoewel niet heel origineel, een paar verschillende plotlijnen door elkaar heen. Tekenwerk valt erg tegen, die krassen in de gezichten werkt totaal niet en de gezichtsuitdrukkingen zijn levenloos.
Verhaal is wat oppervlakkig en nog niet erg duidelijk waar het naartoe gaat in deel 5, maar tekeningen zijn echt prachtig.
Deze 8-delige serie is meer dan de moeite waard. Het leest als een mix tussen een 8-delige BBC-murder mystery en I Robot (Asimov). Tekening zijn on-Japans rustig en niet als een standaard Manga. Helaas geen Nederlandse editie, maar in het Engels voor de meesten goed te begrijpen.
Prachtig hoe europol agent Gesicht achter de dader van de moorden op de machtigste robots op de aarde aangaat en erachter komt dat ook hij gevaar loopt als één van deze robots. Elke robot vecht miet zijn emoties en de beperkingen die zij als robot bezitten, maar vooral de beperkingen van de mens.
“James Bond meets My Fair Lady meets Quentin Tarantino meets Austin Powers.” Prima basis voor een film en in dit geval blijkt dat ook beter te werken. Zie het als een storyboard die je na de film nog eens kan vergelijken.
Een stuk beklemmender dan de film, maar waarschijnlijk moeilijk te begrijpen als je het originele boek niet hebt gelezen. Runberg tekent de hoofden in verhouding wat te groot en daardoor kan het af en toe wat komisch overkomen, want gezien de strekking van het verhaal misschien niet eens zo vervelend is. Verder prachtig in beeld gebracht, juiste hoeveelheid tekst en een pluim voor de inkleuring.
Wat zo mooi werd opgebouwd in het eerste deel, stort volledig in met deel 2. Belle en Diana lijken zoveel op elkaar dat het geheel onvolgbaar wordt. Als de tekeningen niet zo goed waren, was het 1 ster voor mij geweest.
Dit is Suske en Wiske meets Mr. Incredible. Een aan lager wal geraakte Jeromeke die door een dochter van de baas van Force weer in het gareel wordt geroepen. Weinig origineels, maar leest heerlijk weg. Wegens gezemel en 1sterren van teleurgestelde Suske & Wiske-fans, heb ik de waardering maar wat hoger gelegd.
