Book Review: A Killer Romance by Maggie Blackburn

Rating: 3 Stars

In Maggie Blackburn's “A Killer Romance,” love and murder collide in a cozy mystery set during a Valentine's Day event at the Beach Reads bookshop. As bookseller Summer Merriweather delves into the mysterious death of a guest author, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that lead her on a thrilling quest for the truth.

One of the standout features of this novel is its charming setting by the sea, providing a picturesque backdrop for the unfolding drama. Blackburn's portrayal of Summer as a Shakespeare scholar adds depth to her character, making her not just a sleuth but a relatable and intriguing protagonist.

While the mystery itself is well-crafted and keeps readers guessing until the end, the book could have benefitted from tighter editing. Some readers may find the repetitive mentions of Summer's ankle pain and drug choices to be excessive, detracting from the overall flow of the story.

Despite these minor flaws, “A Killer Romance” offers an engaging plot with likable characters that will appeal to fans of cozy mysteries. Blackburn successfully weaves together treachery, heartbreak, and unexpected twists, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the final reveal.

Overall, “A Killer Romance” is a solid addition to the Beach Reads mystery series, perfect for those looking for a light-hearted yet suspenseful read to enjoy on a cozy evening.

Book Review: The Traitors by Carissa Ann Lynch

Rating: ★★★★☆

I recently delved into the mysterious and suspenseful world created by Carissa Ann Lynch in her novel, The Traitors, and, it did not disappoint. From the intriguing premise to the captivating characters, this book kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

In The Traitors, six individuals receive an enigmatic invitation to spend 24 hours in the eerie Beechwood Castle, with the chance to win a portion of one million dollars. However, the dark history of the castle, tainted by a brutal murder, sets the stage for a night filled with treachery and deception. As the night unfolds, it becomes clear that among the six participants, one is an imposter and all are harboring secrets that could prove deadly.

Lynch masterfully weaves a tale of suspense and intrigue, drawing readers into a web of mystery that keeps them guessing until the very end. The pacing of the story is relentless, with twists and turns that will leave you breathless. The author's writing is engaging and evocative, effectively setting the scene within the decaying walls of Beechwood Castle.

One aspect of the book that truly stood out to me was the diverse and well-developed cast of characters. Each individual brought their own secrets and motivations to the table, adding layers of complexity to the narrative. As alliances shift and suspicions rise, it becomes increasingly difficult to discern friend from foe.

I must also commend Lynch on the brilliant cover design of the book, which immediately sets the tone for the thrilling story that lies within its pages. It's evident that the author has a keen eye for detail and knows how to craft a compelling story that keeps readers hooked until the very last page.

In conclusion, The Traitors is a gripping and entertaining read that seamlessly blends mystery, suspense, and a touch of darkness. If you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing and leave you wanting more, look no further than Carissa Ann Lynch's captivating novel.

Last Night

Review: Last Night by Luanne Rice

Rating 2-Stars

Luanne Rice's novel Last Night presents a chilling scenario where a blizzard plays the backdrop to a mysterious disappearance and murder. Set in the scenic Rhode Island shore, the story follows the investigation led by Detective Conor Reid, his brother Tom, and Maddie's sister Hadley as they navigate through a web of secrets and suspicions surrounding Maddie Morrison's death and her daughter CeCe's vanishing.

The cover of the book is indeed striking, capturing the essence of the wintry setting that looms large in the narrative. However, beyond the cover, the story fails to deliver a compelling experience. The writing style feels clunky and lacks the finesse needed to engage readers effectively. The characters come off as flat and two-dimensional, failing to evoke any strong emotional connection from the audience.

Despite these shortcomings, one aspect shines in Last Night - the vivid and atmospheric depiction of the setting. Luanne Rice excels in bringing the icy Rhode Island shore to life, painting a picture so vivid that it becomes a character in itself within the story. The author's ability to craft such a rich and immersive setting is commendable and stands out as the highlight of the book.

In conclusion, while Last Night may have its merits in terms of setting, it falls short in delivering a captivating storytelling experience due to its awkward writing style and underdeveloped characters. Readers seeking a gripping mystery may find themselves wanting more depth and complexity from this novel.

Book Review: Twenty-Seven Minutes by Ashley Tate

Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

As I delved into Ashley Tate's novel, Twenty-Seven Minutes, I was immediately drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding Phoebe Dean's untimely death and the secrets that unfolded in the small town of West Wilmer. The cover art of the book is captivating and sets the tone for a suspenseful read that promises to unravel dark truths and hidden motivations.

The story revolves around the aftermath of a tragic car accident that claimed Phoebe's life, raising questions about her brother Grant's delayed call for help and the lingering mystery surrounding that fateful night. Tate skillfully weaves a narrative filled with grief, ambition, and secrets, all set against the backdrop of a town haunted by a past tragedy.

While the writing in Twenty-Seven Minutes is engaging and easy to follow, I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by the predictability of the plot. Despite the multiple points of view that offer insight into the characters' lives and emotions, the storyline felt lacking in surprises and twists that would have elevated the reading experience.

However, one aspect that stood out in the book was the well-developed characters, each with their own distinct personalities and motives. Tate excels in portraying the complexities of human nature, making the interactions between the caretaker, secret girlfriend, missing bad boy, and former football star both compelling and realistic.

In conclusion, Twenty-Seven Minutes is a decent debut novel that showcases Ashley Tate's talent for crafting relatable characters and exploring themes of grief and hidden truths. While the plot may fall short in terms of originality and suspense, the strength of the character development makes this book worth a read for fans of contemporary literary suspense.

Book Review: “Once a Queen” by Sarah Arthur

Rating: 2 Stars

“Once a Queen” by Sarah Arthur tells the story of fourteen-year-old Eva Joyce who uncovers family secrets and hidden portals to other worlds during a summer at her English grandmother's mysterious manor house. The novel promises a blend of mystery, fantasy, and family intrigue.

While the cover of the book is captivating and sets high expectations, the story itself falls short. The narrative unfolds slowly, lacking in significant events that keep readers engaged. The parallels drawn to “The Chronicles of Narnia” are evident, reflecting the author's admiration for C.S. Lewis, but they may feel too derivative for some readers.

The world-building in “Once a Queen” is decent, providing a backdrop for the unfolding secrets and discoveries. However, the execution of the plot leaves much to be desired, failing to deliver a truly immersive experience.

While some aspects of the story may hold promise, such as the concept of hidden portals and family mysteries, the execution falls short of creating a truly captivating narrative. Readers who enjoy slow-paced mysteries with a touch of fantasy may find some enjoyment in “Once a Queen,” but those seeking a more dynamic and engaging read may be left wanting.

In conclusion, “Once a Queen” presents an intriguing premise but struggles to deliver a compelling story that resonates beyond its initial setup. While some may appreciate its nods to classic fantasy literature, overall, the book fails to leave a lasting impression that would compel readers to continue with the series.

Book Review: The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years by Shubnum Khan

Rating: ★★★★☆

Shubnum Khan's “The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years” takes readers on a mesmerizing journey through the crumbling halls of Akbar Manzil, a once-grand estate that now stands as a refuge for those seeking solace from their pasts. Set in South Africa, the novel weaves together two timelines - one in 1932 following the Khan family's struggles, and another in 2014 where Sana Malek unravels the mysteries hidden within the mansion's walls.

Sana's curiosity and tenacity lead her to explore the forgotten East Wing of Akbar Manzil, unearthing the tragic tale of Meena, the original owner's second wife who met a mysterious end a century ago. As Sana delves deeper into the mansion's dark history, she unknowingly awakens a grieving djinn who has lingered since Meena's demise, setting off a chain of events that will impact the lives of both the living and the dead.

Khan's writing is both enchanting and evocative, immersing readers in the eerie atmosphere of Akbar Manzil alongside its eclectic cast of characters. The dual timeline narrative adds depth to the story, allowing for a rich exploration of family dynamics, love, loss, and the enduring power of secrets.

One of the standout features of the book is its captivating cover art, which perfectly captures the haunting allure of the story within. Khan's ability to blend history, mystery, and supernatural elements seamlessly makes “The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years” a compelling and unforgettable read.

Overall, I found “The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years” to be a riveting tale that kept me engaged from start to finish. With its well-developed characters and intricate plot twists, this novel is sure to enchant readers who enjoy a blend of historical fiction, mystique, and poignant storytelling. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and immersive read that lingers long after the final page is turned.

4/5 Stars

At The Lloyd Estate, where something peculiar lurks within its vast grounds, we are introduced to Audrey Lloyd, the enigmatic owner with a deep connection to the suffocating darkness that shrouds the mansion. When ambitious broker Terri Nicholls steps into the picture, a series of events is set into motion, intertwining the fates of those who dare to uncover the secrets hidden within the estate.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stars

I recently had the pleasure of delving into the poignant world painted by Lelita Baldockt in “The Baker's Secret.” Set in Nazi-occupied Latvia, the novel follows the gripping story of two sisters faced with an unthinkable decision that echoes through generations.

When her sister, Estere, returns exhausted and pregnant, a chain of events is set into motion that will test the sisters' loyalty and resilience in the face of adversity.

Baldockt masterfully weaves a tale of sacrifice, courage, and secrets that spans continents and decades. The author's vivid descriptions transport the reader to a time and place fraught with danger and uncertainty, where every decision carries weighty consequences.

What struck me most about this book was its ability to draw me in despite my usual aversion to war-themed literature. The character of Zenta, a baker thrust into the turmoil of war, provided a unique perspective that kept me engrossed from start to finish.

Book Review: Murder at the Blarney Bash by Darci Hannah

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Stars

Alright, folks, grab your shamrock sugar cookies and let's dive into “Murder at the Blarney Bash” – a cozy mystery that's as charming as a lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan.

So, we're back in Beacon Harbor with our amateur sleuth Lindsey Bakewell and her trusty sidekick, Wellington the Newfoundland. They're knee-deep in St. Patrick's Day prep at the Beacon Bakeshop when things take a wild turn. Lindsey's boyfriend's uncle, Finnigan O'Connor, lands himself in some serious trouble after being accused of a leprechaun-themed murder. Yep, you heard that right – a pot of gold, a missing shillelagh, and a whole lot of blarney.

Now, let's address the elephant in the room – Kennedy. Ugh, can we talk about a character going off the rails? She was like a totally different person in this book, and not in a good way. But hey, aside from that, the writing was spot-on. The mystery had me guessing with all its red herrings, and the pace kept me turning those pages.

The characters (well, except Kennedy), the adorable dogs, and the charming setting – all still top-notch. And let's not forget those mouth-watering recipes at the end. A nice little bonus that brings a taste of the story right into your kitchen.

In a nutshell, “Murder at the Blarney Bash” is a solid addition to the series, despite a bump in the road with one character. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries with a sprinkle of Irish flair, this one's for you. Can't wait to see what Lindsey and the gang get up to next!

Rating: 4.5 stars

Edwin Hill's “Who to Believe” is a riveting domestic suspense thriller that delves into the dark underbelly of a seemingly idyllic New England coastal town. Set in Monreith, Massachusetts, the story kicks off with the shocking murder of popular restaurateur Laurel Thibodeau, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit community and unraveling a web of sinister secrets.

The narrative unfolds amidst a cast of characters who are as complex as they are unreliable. From Laurel's husband with ominous gambling debts to a group of friends harboring their own skeletons in the closet, the novel expertly weaves together jealousy, revenge, adultery, and greed in a gripping tapestry of deceit and betrayal.

Hill's writing is sharp and enthralling, propelling the reader through a rollercoaster of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat until the final reveal. The author masterfully crafts a suspenseful atmosphere, drawing you deeper into the murky motives and hidden agendas of each character.

What I especially loved about “Who to Believe” is the characters. None of the players in this tale are particularly likable, yet their flawed personas add layers of intrigue and complexity to the narrative. Hill's bold choice to present a cast of unreliable narrators pays off, creating a compelling dynamic that challenges readers to question everyone's motives.

In conclusion, “Who to Believe” is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and mystery novels. With its well-paced plot, unexpected twists, and morally ambiguous characters, this book is a captivating journey into the darker facets of human nature. EASTER BASKET MURDER by LESLIE MEIER

⭐⭐⭐ Stars

In Tinker's Cove, businesses are at odds over an Easter Basket-themed promotion aimed at increasing in-store sales. Conflict arises when a valuable golden egg, created by a reclusive Maine artist, is stolen. Part-time reporter Lucy Stone takes on the task of investigating three struggling entrepreneurs who become suspects in the theft. As Lucy delves deeper into the case, a seemingly harmless shopping spree takes a sinister turn when a murder occurs, forcing her to prevent the killer from striking again and uncovering a town scandal in the process.

My thoughts...In all honesty, I must admit that Lucy isn't my favorite character in this book series. I tend to steer clear of the full-length books featuring her, but I found her more bearable in these novellas. This one was decent. It had an engaging plot with plenty of red herrings to keep me guessing. Admittedly, there wasn't as much investigating as I would have liked, but overall, I still found it enjoyable. Surprisingly, Lucy wasn't as annoying and preachy in this one, which made the reading experience more pleasant than I had anticipated.

Hayley finds herself in the midst of a murder mystery and must unravel the clues to prevent further harm.

My thoughts...Out of the three novellas in the series, this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. I'm a fan of the series overall, but one thing that bugs me is how the author keeps throwing in these flashbacks right in the middle of the action. It totally messes with the flow of the story, and that was especially true for this novella. It just made it hard for me to stay engaged and really get into the plot.

In “Julia Snowden's Easter Sunday at Windsholme,” a picturesque mansion on a secluded Maine island, the festive atmosphere is disrupted when a dead body is found in the garden, only to disappear mysteriously. This unexpected turn of events transforms a simple Easter egg hunt into a perilous quest for the truth. Armed with just a copy of The Adventures of Peter Rabbit, Julia must unravel the puzzle to determine whether she is unwittingly entangled in a murderer's sinister scheme.

My thoughts...Out of the three stories I read, this one totally won me over. It had a pretty decent plot that had me hooked, a mystery that kept me on my toes, characters I actually liked, and a cool setting that I could picture myself in. Two thumbs up - definitely my fave of the bunch.

Book Review: Murder at a Scottish Castle by Traci Hall

Rating: 3 Stars

Traci Hall's “Murder at a Scottish Castle” takes readers on a cozy mystery journey with sweater shop owner, Paislee Shaw, as she finds herself entangled in a murder investigation during the annual bagpiping competition at Ramsey Castle in the seaside village of Nairn, Scotland.

In this installment, Paislee Shaw, along with her son Brody, Grandpa, and their black Scottish terrier Wallace, find themselves in the midst of a rivalry between the Earl of Lyon and the previous year's bagpiping champion. When the reigning champion suddenly collapses and dies, suspicion falls on foul play, prompting Paislee to use her sleuthing skills to uncover the truth.

While the cover of the book is visually appealing and the setting in the charming coastal town of Nairn adds a cozy atmosphere to the story, I found it challenging to fully engage with the plot. The narrative seems to focus more on Paislee's personal life rather than the mystery itself, which could be a drawback for those seeking a more fast-paced and suspenseful read.

On a positive note, fans of cozy mysteries will appreciate the intricate details about bagpipes woven into the storyline and the endearing presence of Wallace, the Scottish terrier. Despite some pacing issues and a heavier emphasis on personal relationships, “Murder at a Scottish Castle” offers a picturesque setting and an intriguing cast of characters that will appeal to readers looking for a light-hearted whodunit set against the backdrop of a Scottish castle.

Overall, while the book was not perfect fit for me, it provides a pleasant escape to the Scottish countryside and delivers a blend of quaint charm and amateur sleuthing that can be enjoyed by fans of cozy mysteries.

Book Review: Evergreen by Devin Greenlee

⭐⭐⭐.5/5 Stars

First off, I have to mention the stunning cover of Evergreen by Devin Greenlee. It immediately caught my attention and perfectly captures the magical essence of the story within. Now, on to my thoughts about this book.

All seventeen-year-old Quill wants is a taste of normalcy, a break from his family's generations-old garden and the responsibilities that come with being a dryad. Unlike his family members, Quill is a male dryad, the first ever, and lacks any magical abilities. With only his shock of green hair and eyes to set him apart, he yearns for an adventure beyond the confines of his home.

But Quill's desire for freedom becomes a reality when he catches the attention of Liam Watson, his new neighbor from a world devoid of magic and filled with electronics and social media. Despite finding Liam somewhat irritating (though undeniably cute), Quill can't resist the allure of the outside world and the connection he feels with Liam.

As Quill begins to explore the world beyond his garden, he discovers that danger lurks in the shadows, threatening not only his newfound freedom but also the very essence of the magical urban garden. The more Quill delves into this mysterious world, the more the danger escalates.

Overall, I found Evergreen to be an enjoyable read. The writing may not be perfect, but the author has created a unique and imaginative world where magic and technology collide, bringing together two unlikely protagonists.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is the blossoming relationship between Quill and Liam. Their interactions are both heartwarming and entertaining, and I couldn't help but root for their connection to grow stronger.

That being said, there were moments when I wished for more depth and development in certain areas. The concept of plant magic and the history of dryads are fascinating, but I felt they were somewhat underexplored. Additional background information would have enhanced my understanding and appreciation of these elements.

In conclusion, Evergreen by Devin Greenlee is a delightful read that combines magic, romance, and adventure. While the writing may have its flaws and the lack of detailed exposition on certain aspects left me wanting more, the story as a whole is captivating. I recommend this book to anyone seeking an enchanting escape into a world where nature and technology collide, and love blossoms in unexpected places.

Book Review: Deadly to the Core by Joyce Tremel

⭐⭐⭐/5 Stars

First off, let's talk about that cover. It's eye-catching and sets the stage for what promises to be a thrilling cozy mystery. Now, onto my review.

Deadly to the Core is the first book in a new cozy mystery series by Joyce Tremel. This book introduces us to Kate Mulligan, a woman who inherits her great uncle's fruit orchard. However, Kate soon realizes that apples aren't the only things that can have rotten cores.

At thirty-five years old, Kate is still recovering from the tragic loss of her husband in a car crash. Physically, she has healed, but her spirit remains fragile. When she inherits the orchard in a small town near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, she sees it as an opportunity for a fresh start. With hopes of opening a cider house, Kate's plans take a dark turn when she discovers the body of the orchard manager, Carl Randolph. Now, she must uncover the truth behind his murder.

The story takes an interesting twist when Kate learns of Carl's mysterious large deposits into his bank account. Was he blackmailing someone? Or was someone paying him to keep quiet? As she tries to untangle the web of secrets surrounding the orchard, Kate also faces offers from a mysterious buyer who wants to purchase her property. And then there's Daniel Martinez, the neighboring orchard owner, who seems to have secrets of his own.

Tremel does a fantastic job of creating a vivid setting. The small town atmosphere near Gettysburg adds depth to the story and immerses readers in the community. It's easy to feel like you're right there with Kate as she navigates through the twists and turns of the investigation.

Kate herself is a likable protagonist. She's relatable and sympathetic, making it easy to root for her as she tries to uncover the truth. The secondary characters are also well-developed and add depth to the story. Tremel has created a cast of characters who feel like real people and not just plot devices.

However, one area where the book could use some improvement is in the writing style. There were moments where the descriptions felt excessive and unnecessary, detracting from the pace of the mystery. While vivid descriptions can enhance a story, in this case, they occasionally slowed down the momentum. Tightening up the prose would help maintain a stronger focus on the mystery aspect.

Overall, Deadly to the Core is a solid start to a new cozy mystery series. Despite some areas for improvement in the writing style, the engaging setting and likable characters make it an enjoyable read. Fans of cozy mysteries will find themselves drawn into Kate Mulligan's world and eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

I, for one, will definitely be checking out the next book in this series. Joyce Tremel has laid a strong foundation for an intriguing series that has great potential.
