đ§ Listened in audio đ˘ Narrated by: Joseph Tweedale âą Duration: 9 hours đˇď¸ Publisher: Findaway Voices đ Release Date: January 1, 2022
This one came recommended by my book club with promises of âedgeâofâyourâseat twistsâ and a brooding atmosphere. A retired detective dragged back into one last case? Book club friends swearing it was âgrippingâ? On paper, this should have been a slam dunk for me.
But honestly? It just didnât hook me. The start felt lackluster, dragging through setup without enough pull to keep momentum going. Then there was the narration, Joseph Tweedaleâs delivery came across monotonous, flattening what could have been tense moments into a flatline. In a world overflowing with incredible audiobooks and not nearly enough time, I bailed around 15% in. Nothing in the plot or characters sparked that âjust one more chapterâ urge.
And honestly? In a reading life already overflowing with tempting TBR picks, this one didnât earn its place. Nothing about the characters, pacing, or unfolding plot compelled me to push through. Sometimes a book just doesnât click... and that was very much the case here.
Would I recommend it? This was a DNF for me at around 15%, and while I can see how The Engine House might appeal to readers who enjoy slower, methodical British police procedurals, it wasnât for me. If youâre someone who needs a strong hook or dynamic narration to stay engaged, this might be a tough listen.
