Finally read this after it being recommended for ages as I enjoy Stephen King and the horror genre itself.
This is a good book and I did enjoy it, however if you are going in to it wanting to be scared, this isn't the book in my opinion. Not sure if the standards for scary were a lot weaker in the 80's, but I didn't even come close to being scared whilst reading it.
The pacing is also a little slow at some points and I felt like I needed to “get through” the first third or so.
Really liked this book after finally reading it.
I know Stephen King is known for fleshing things out, but my only criticism is that I think I would have liked it more if it was just a little bit shorter, like 100 pages or so.
This may just be because I have adhd, but I did struggle to focus in some of the more “dull” sections and I didn't really feel they added much to the overall story.
In general, I liked this book, however there was a moment that made me feel uneasy.
Obviously age gap romances will always be a bit controversial, but normally I'm of the opinion that as long as it's two consenting adults, who cares.
But when it got to a part where it was talking about how Alice was an adult when Joy was born and how she held her when she was just a baby, idk, that creeped me out a bit ngl.
Other than that, I enjoyed this book despite the cancer plot line coming up out of nowhere and feeling like it was just thrown in there to resolve a conflict right at the end.
I have only ever DNF'd one book, and this one came incredibly close to being the second.
A couple of the stories in here are good, but most are just incredibly dull or ridiculous (but not in a good way).
This isn't that long of a book but it took me ages to get through as it was so boring and felt slow paced even though the stories are all short.
This took me three weeks to get through (dipping in and out) when I read IT by Stephen King in 5 days (which is a 1200 page book!)
The good stories are also all put together, so there were large sections of the book that were just boring story after boring story.
I would also not classify this as a horror book, not a single one of these stories was actually scary in any way.
