The Woman in the Window

Just wow. This was an impeccably crafted twisty story, I had no idea what was going to happen. I'm very impressed with all the twists. Anna was fantastically written - as a therapist, there is nothing I hate more in a book than a poorly written MHP, and Anna was SPOT ON. Such a good book, such engaging characters, so well written.

The Office of Historical Corrections

This collection was absolutely amazing. Usually in a short story collection some will resonate with me and others won't, but I thought every story in the collection, especially the titular novella, was truly remarkable. The messages, characters, and scenarios were poignant and brutally honest. I loved this.

The Lottery and Other Stories

These stories were so subtle and odd. I really appreciated the mundane interactions that Jackson manages to make somehow so creepy. Masterfully written, never too blunt and blatant, always thought provoking and unsettling.

I've never really liked enemies-to-lovers. But make it queer and I am SO HERE FOR IT. Also a fantastic portrayal of anxiety and depression. So basically, everything one could want in a book.

This was so so so so good! I LOVE Mike's voice, the coming of age narrative here, and how realistic/relatable everyone feels. This was a fantastic story about growing up black and gay, and the writing style made it even better.

I really enjoyed I Crawl Through It, and was excited to read another A. S. King. Switch did NOT disappoint. I really enjoyed the themes of manipulation/familial abuse/coping/cultural differences, and thought Tru was a fantastic and relatable protagonist. King's surrealism really worked for me here.

Silence is a Sense

Really well written, being stuck in a character's head can be hit or miss, but Rana's character was one whose thoughts I deeply enjoyed exploring. Haunting and symbolic, with powerful social commentary that doesn't cross the line into feeling preachy.

Midnight Chicken

Wrote a review for

The only cookbook that has made me cry. Deeply relatable, heartwarming, and reassuring. As someone who has attempted suicide, someone who lost a life partner too soon (it's always too soon), and someone who loves cooking, this book truly spoke to me. The recipes were vibrant, and the writing style is like being wrapped in a warm blanket. I loved this book.

Awfully dark for a teen novel, but beautifully written and heart-wrenching. This felt real and desperate in a powerful way, with fantastic characters.

This was so unique and actually way more emotional and significant than I expected from the format. Absolutely personal and a beautiful portrait of a failed relationship.

This book was weird as hell and I loved every minute of it. The characters are so interesting and unreliable, and I was fascinated by the way their stories unraveled. This was riveting and bizarre and absolutely fantastic.

How to Pronounce Knife: Stories

Wrote a review for

Wow.... I LOVED these stories. They were poignant, hard hitting, and such an interesting snapshot of the immigrant experience. I haven't read any Laotian authors before, but Thammavongsa has convinced me that I need to read more!! Such straight-forward writing and portrayals of (often complicated) relationships.
