I really liked this story! The characters voices are diverse and easily distinguishable, the concept is unique and vibrant, and I thought it was well represented. The sudden shift at the end to understanding was disappointing for me - it felt like a forced happy ending, and not realistic. Overall a great read though!
These recipes were overly complicated, featured strange combinations, and just generally felt unnecessarily pretentious. There were a few good ones, but nothing I felt inclined to try out based on the title and description/ingredients. I love cooking with vegetables but this feels too modern and “unique”
In contrast to a lot of the other reviewers here, I didn't really find this book that enjoyable or memorable. Camille was selfish, the plot felt incredibly improbable and engineered, the ending was anticlimactic and disappointing. I liked the premise, but found the storyline unbelievable, even doing my best to suspend my disbelief.
I enjoyed the commentary in this book on race and treating people like people, and the ulterior motives that can come with that. I enjoyed the way the author wrote, and the way things concluded was realistic, if not satisfying. Minus one star because I didn't feel like any of the other characters were fleshed out at all besides Alix and Emira. The rest felt extremely 2-D.
