There is some good world building in this novel, but otherwise it is a juvenile and clumsy romance masquerading as a juvenile and clumsy fantasy. A solid “meh” from me.

Tom Holt clearly tries to be funny, but he tries way to hard. It seems to me that he tries all he can to write stuff that compares to Adams or Pratchett, but he falls way short of the mark. The “clueless protagonist bumbles about” bit seems to be an attempt to channel Connie Willis but even that fails - Willis is consistently more irritating than Holt.

Tom Holt is a solid writer - I have read several of this K J Parker fantasy novels and enjoyed them - but I will stay away from his attempts at comedy from now on.
