I'd probably say I was disappointed by this. It gets 4 stars because it's really good but unfortunately it's one of those books that simply can't be read in a vacuum so it inevitably suffers from high expectations. The final chapter is absolutely incredible with its suspense. I think I just expected something more
Really enjoyed this.
I can see how many would not like it as could be argued it goes nowhere but the things it hints at and the parallels the political situations have to what is going at the moment were very interesting.
It's also an fun commentary on the power of cults and the danger of people / politics that don't hold rationalism in high regard. I'm interested to see what the second book has to offer but i do have concerns this story may have been better left open.
To describe this as witty would do it a great disservice. Its downright brilliant and a must read for anyone with even a passing interest in scifi.
It would have been a 5 star rating if it were not for the final 10% of the book which i thought was overly sentimental and felt out of sync with the rest of the book.
My only concern now is i wont ever be able to watch star trek in the same way again.
At first i loved this book. The initial stages of humanity starting to notice something was not quite right with their technology was genuinely creepy and interesting.
Later on though i felt the plot lost its way slightly and it ended up being a collection of truly excellent scifi ideas instead of an excellent scifi story.
To be clear though some of the ideas are REALLY fantastic and i can see why the book has been picked up for a movie adaptation by Spielberg. Im almost certain the film will bear little resemblance to the books plot though and will just pick from its setting and ideas as its basis.
That doesn't stop me from being excited to see where the movie goes though...especially if it stays faithful to some of the books darker moments.
Loved this. Easy to read, fun and filled with just enough scifi ideas to make me want to investigate the other books in this universe. My only qualm is the book very much felt like an opening gambit in a bigger series. It spent most of the time setting up the universe and that meant that over 350 pages there wasn't allot left for a particularly deep plot.
That said the universe and characters alone were worth the investment in time. I will read Ghost Brigades.
The defacto ufo book for skeptics that ends up being more of an investigation into Americas counter intelligence practices in the 60s. In short they were shocking and appeared to have no limits as to the depths they would goto I order to protect their military secrets
Aslo UFOs from outer space don't exist
