For all the good reviews and ratings of this book I was honestly a bit disappointed. It felt heavy handed in a slightly clumsy way with the message of the plot. And I got so bored with their fight caused by a misunderstanding that I skipped ahead to when it resolved because it was dragging on for so long and wasn't written very well. While I understand where it came from based on both sides and the trauma they've experienced, it just felt contrived to add drama and unnecessary. Especially in books about queer love it feels cheap to use misunderstandings to trigger a huge fight as a plot device.

DNF- the blatant references to racism and colorism without addressing any of it or hinting, then also making the resistance 'also the bad guys' is pretty gross imperialist colonizer material.
