This book had so much promise for the first 20% and I was so sure it'd be at least a 3 star, likely 4-5 stat book. I love a controlling, manipulative MMC who blackmails a strong FMC into sleeping with him. She's terrified of him but her body betrays her. In this book. the FMC betrays him, putting him in jail and moves on with another guy. Throw in second chance romance where the MMC is still obsessed with the FMC, kills anyone who hurts her, forces a marriage, holds her captive, the FMC tries to run away only for MMC to catch her and punish her, refusing to give her freedom from start to end, breeding kink and secret child. All my favorite tropes in this one book and omg I was so excited.
But during the second chance romance phase, for such a strong FMC she gave up fighting too early. There was no fight at all after she married him. As much as I love body betrayal, it didn't work in this book and made the FMC into a weak character that was just obsessed with having sex with the MMC. The FMC is known as 'ruthless king' and has children she supposedly wants to go back to, but as soon as she sleeps with the MMC after the forced marriage, there is no fighting and no escape attempts. Her character was so disappointing. I love body betrayal and psychological manipulation in dark romance but there was no gradual brainwashing in this at all. The FMC just immediately caved. Her brother even came to rescue her to help her go back to her children but the FMC refused his offer.
I was so annoyed by this, I considered DNFing at the 30% mark but I decided to power through because Lola King's writing is good and I do like how controlling, unrepentant and manipulative the MMC was. Unfortunately it stayed much the same, with the same problems, and I probably could have DNF'ed. There is also some fem dom, blood play and forced nipple piercing which I wasn't a fan of
There are two plot twists at the end, the first where the FMC had orchestrated her own kidnapping, the second where the MMC knew about the existence of the twins in the first place but the FMC is so changed and weak for the MMC, it didn't redeem the book for me. All she did after killing the MMC was cry. I also was confused why the Luciano's would even help the FMC kill the MMC, only to revive him because it benefited them more to have him alive. That made no sense.
It also didn't make much sense that the MMC never tried to see the twins, despite knowing they were possibly his biological children
I wish there was an epilogue with the couple's future children but sadly there wasn't. Wouldn't reread.

I liked this book OK.
The love story was really cute and not dark at all compared to other Sam Mariano books. The FMC is a naïve positive ray of sunshine. The hitman MMC starts off with good intentions but almost immediately after decides the FMC is his, slowly coaxes her to his car while activating a jammer so she can't call her ex and kidnaps her because he knows that even he would be a better boyfriend to her than Brady. When the MMC explains his plans that he wants her to act as his fake boyfriend, the FMC is so sweet she's instantly onboard and agrees to help him out. The FMC's excitement over the old towns and various shops was so endearing to me. And the way they were even talking about their future kids and future marriage despite the fake relationship was adorable too.
All the smut between them was good, especially the dubious consent scene.
I initially didn't put it together this book was linked to the Morelli series even when Jasper called Adrian but when the book mentioned Mrs Morelli omg, I almost squealed with joy. I loved Mia and Mateo and just had to go back to reread their scenes together - of course skipping everything with Meg in it.
What led this book down was the plot and pacing. The pacing at times felt slow. And I disliked the third act breakup - it felt so out of place and unnecessary. I also don't buy that Mateo would allow Jasper to move them into his mansion. He can't exactly let every single one of his staff members stay in the house. Every single one of his staff members would love Mateo's level of protection to protect themselves and their family members but it's not feasible.
The jump to the epilogue also felt really sudden. There wasn't a breeding kink scene but at the very least, a proposal scene, marriage scene or even a pregnancy test in between would have been nice.

Almost pure smut but the smut was forbidden and spicy.
We saw hints of breeding kink so I was disappointed we didn’t get an epilogue with kids or pregnancy. I was also a bit weirded about the mum being OK with everything and am confused how she fits in the picture now

I was looking for a spicy read but there were so many references to the FMC being plus-sized and chubby that it became distracting to me. Sex in the public bathroom scenes also give me the ick. DNF 67%

This book wasn’t terrible but I DNF 81%. I like the premise of a dark omegaverse and the alpha MMC purposely tricking the FMC into heat and breeding/holding her captive. I feel like the book when downhill after the heat though, which was about 20% into the book. The characters weren’t likeable or unlikeable, the smut didn’t feel spicy and the chemistry between the leads weren’t strong enough for me.
The book also started focusing on the plot after this, and the plot wasn’t great and I found it even less enjoyable than the romance. The FMC also stopped trying to escape, though I did enjoy the MMC grovelling.
The plot just couldn’t hold my interest so I ultimately DNF, even though I was so close to finishing the book

I do like a good reverse gap dark romance from time to time and one where the MMC kidnaps the FMC is an added bonus. But a single mother school teacher with greying hair isn’t the type of FMC I personally enjoy reading about. The writing is decent though. DNF 37%

It was almost a four stars but there was way too much Rhys/Abby. The smut was more detailed for them compared to the actual main couple. I found Abby's perspective and dialogue really childish and cringe so I was really annoyed how much of their scenes there were and how she was supposedly well educated and intelligent. I was so annoyed by the hundreds of pages of them together that I skipped their scenes and was so tempted to give this book two stars
However I did quite like the main couple, how obsessed the MMC was with the FMC and relentless he was when pursuing the FMC. He was a sap when it came to wooing her. Although their scenes could have been spicier and the ending was so abrupt. I was torn on whether it should be a two stars because of that.
The amount of Abby/Rhys and the terrible ending has meant I will definitely not reread this

It was almost a 3 stars or even 4 stars. I loved Mateo's POV of Accidental Witness and his pining over Mia. I had no idea he tried to get Mia pregnant! It was such a shame it didn't work out. It would have prevented the entire sequence of events in the entire serjes
This book lost me at the reminder of Meg and all of the scenes of them as ‘sister-wives'.
I struggle to buy Mateo loved Mia the whole time, when he fucked, impregnated and proposed to Meg. This was even after he got back together with Mia. And this was for four years. Years of Mia sharing Mateo with Meg and bonding with children that aren't even hers.
And in this book, the nerve of him to complain about 7 children at the end. It IS all of Mateo's fault. It was his choice to impregnate Meg, fuck her for 5 years, even knowing he loved Mia the whole time and her relationship with Vince was not going to last.
I also hated Meg's POV and her bonding with Rafe. Her ‘friendship' with Mia just destroys my soul everytime I read about it
Mia deserved so much better. Everything post Meg really made me wish Mia went back to Vince.
I also agree we should have gotten Mateo's POV while Mia was in Vegas. I would have loved seeing him completely lose his mind. Or even that breakup scene where Colin calls Mateo to tell him Mia was going to leave him for Vince again.
I did really like the scene with Mia, Tristan and Mateo, though I would have loved to see Dom again too
