Wow. This book was so amazing. The only reason it didn't get five stars was because of the info dump at the beginning. Even for a lover of world building and hard magic systems like me, it was a little too much. It was necessary to the plot, but spreading it out would have helped. Overall though, amazing book with a dark twist and a somewhat predictable but incredibly well done ending.
If you have ever owned a dog, please read this series. It's so sweet, and while it is sad, the endings are always happy. It's refreshing to be able to read a book where a non-human is narrating on human life, and fun to see the reasoning behind our dog's actions. Seriously, read this book series. You won't regret it.
I liked it- very interesting, realistic world. The only problem is that the plot itself isn't all that great. It feels like the love interests in the novel are only there for attention. The twist and the ending are very predictable. Nevertheless, I did like it, if only so I could see more of the world and see how someone could become so indoctrinated into a way of life.
I wasn't intrigued by the mystery at all. There were too many interruptions by the framing device, the world building made no sense when you thought about it (seriously, they have advanced deep sea tech but still have to send letters by snail mail?), and every character wrote very Properly like they were from a Jane Austen novel, and no one had their own voice.
Poorly written, boring action, constant head-jumping to the point that it's confusing whose POV you're in, the author really needed to put down the thesaurus, and tons of anachronisms.
