Zo’n boek dat voelt alsof er een vóór en een ná het lezen ervan bestaat. Langs een andere omweg, met, toegegeven, minder ufo-getuigenissen en uitzaaiingen maar een vergelijkbare hoeveelheid kwantummechanica op iets te instabiele leeftijd, ben ik in een verrassend vergelijkbare visie op wetenschap, perceptie en realiteit beland. Desalniettemin zet alleen al het gevoel gezien te worden in haar nieuwe woorden voor hoe ik dit bestaan ervaar, misschien zelfs een fractie minder eenzaam te hoeven zijn, mijn wereldbeeld op haar kop. Ik weet niet of ik nu wil mediteren of drugs wil doen of juist een dutje, maar ik hoop vooral dat ik ooit nog de kans krijg Lieke te spreken, vóór of na deze werkelijkheid.

Another lovely read from this creative team, though probably less intriguing of a mystery after weeks of watching The Hangman in The Penguinon HBO. Not entirely sure how I feel about Sofia’s portrayal as a female villain who looks overtly butch/trans just to signal that she’s physically strong enough to string people up. Still curious about the hint about twins, as I fully expected there to be another “Sofia” who’d returned from Italy in her place. Maybe something connected to Selina’s lineage; When in Rome is up next.

Nice explorations of the character and past of Batman in three short stories, but ultimately the connection to The Long Halloween series seems tenuous at best and a blatant marketing ploy at worst.

Finally opened up my signed copy on a long train ride and flew through it. Queer, funny, suspenseful, and thoroughly enjoyable throughout. It's been a long while since I've enjoyed reading this much and I'm very grateful for that experience. I was very happy to find the sequel had already been announced by the time I actually read this one – and immediately pre-ordered another personalized copy, obviously.

Laat ik daar wel aan toevoegen dat ondanks dat ik waardeer dat er een roman is die gaat over een trans personage in de kast die alle belangrijke gevoelens wegstopt en maskeert met humor, het nog steeds storend kan zijn om zo on the nose te doen als je niet uitdiept waar het om gaat — Lakmakers zelfbewustzijn heeft zo z'n grenzen en meer afstand tussen persoon en personage had waardevol kunnen zijn. Tegelijkertijd heb ik het boek ook met een wat oudere klas besproken, waar toch nog best wat zeikerds tussen zaten die het wat te vulgair vonden allemaal, dus het heeft alleen al waarde om die mensen te irriteren; van onze generatie had het juist allemaal wat meer gemogen alleen, want welgesteld perspectief blijft het vaak toch wel en in die zin is het zonder twijfel een roman van een witte man. Suck on that, TERFs.

Wederom bijzonder prettige aanrader van een ex en de verkoper in Savannah Bay die ‘m pakte voor me nog voor ik kon vragen om precies deze.

This is both the ultimate transgender wish fulfillment story and a horrific family drama, striking a balance between superheroics and rough scenes in Danielle's private life. Yes, the antagonizing voices surrounding her gender identity are harsh and unfortunately realistic, but as affected as she may be, she never backs down when it comes to knowing who she is. It's rare for me to feel this represented by a novel. It touched me deeply from the very start, and the capeshit is just a bonus specifically invented for me. What more would you need in life than a trans superheroine?

Zo verdomde prachtig. Ik herlees consequent clusters zinnen onmiddellijk voor ik verder durf te gaan. Dit is een gevoel dat ik ooit hoop te bereiken met mijn schrijven.

Er zijn stukken waar het verstoppen achter uitgerekte metaforen en eindeloze erudiete verwijzingen me stoorde, maar het boek wordt hoe verder je komt hoe interessanter, bij gebrek aan een beter woord. Ik vrees dit gedurende m'n leven nog wel vaker te moeten herlezen, al was het maar omdat ik almaar meer zal willen begrijpen.

Ik heb een teringzooi gejankt gisteren en het einde is niet veel geruststellender. De humor zie ik niet, daar is het te vlijmscherp cynisch voor, maar misschien is dat omdat het voor mij veel en veel te dichtbij komt.

This might have been more about what the author needed to write than what I needed to read as a trans sister. I get it, and yet I feel frustrated by the ending, as well as upset about the middle and every use of the word tr*nny. Every cis male side character sucks really badly and that's the world we live in, but I was just hoping to escape into a fantasy rather than be bummed about the reality of trans survival. It's beautiful, but I'm not sure if I'm the audience; it's not necessarily shock porn for cis audiences either, but I can just relate a little too hard?

Human yearning for affection and validation is a relatable topic again and again. The short stories are very much gorgeous in their sadness, but on occasion they flip from pathetic characters to reprehensible ones: “The Sister” (about one man into teenage girls and one into the other man, who leads him on with the promise of a teen sister and feeds him xtc to get him in his bed) made me sick to my stomach to an extent that I can't remember any book doing, which I suppose isn't the worst compliment I could give. Beyond that, topics like sex work and deformity aren't necessarily tackled as well as race and sexuality, so less than perfect in terms of woke points, which is still more than we can expect from most literature.

This series is just so damn strong and yet I keep forgetting just how strong until I return to it. The sheer amount of obscure characters who turn up and get their deserved spotlight is both impressive and delightful.

Iemand me die me erg dierbaar is, zei dat ze elke poëziebundel twee of drie keer herleest voordat het telt als gelezen op haar profiel hier. Gelukkig ben ik alleen maar stikjaloers op wie ze is en ben ik haar niet zelf, want één keer lezen kost mij altijd lang genoeg.
De vriend van m'n moeder, die zelf publiceert, zei dat dit de beste bundel die hij in jaren had gelezen was en dat geldt voor mij weliswaar automatisch, gezien de Grote Literaire Droogte Sedert mijn Tienerdepressie, maar de beelden van botsende culturen (waarin Arnon Grunberg al dan niet alomtegenwoordig is) zijn vlijmscherp.

Atlan actually has a backstory! It wouldn't fit in with the movie, but still, it's more than I got there.
So, should I continue past Johns' run? He does set up more good stuff but he didn't do it himself, what's the word on the next run?

I figured I should start here, with this tiny paperback that's been at my bedside for years; both since it's a thin one and it's a pretty dry bit of prose, so whatever I read next will feel like a breeze.
