R F Kuang really know how to use fantasy as a tool to approach difficult topics.
Her portrait of colonialism, racism, white feminism and class war is brilliant. Their protagonists journeys are fascinating. I highly recommend this read as this book is one of a kind.
Only fault, the story have some pace issues and the author passion for linguistic despite being essential to the story creates unnecessary length bits.
Neverwhere is Alice in wonderland if Alice was a twenty something Londoner businessman in the Nineteens with Doctor who vibes ”.
This is a very bizarre fantasy and I could feel Gaiman style as I watched the adaptation of Good Omens.
He tells a story it's own way and with a brilliant imagination. It is told in a really photographic way and I wasn't surprised to discover it is actually a Tv show adaptation.
I am really difficult with urban fantasy and I know that this book is not a favorite to me. But I would highly recommend the read to a lot of person around me that would know how to appreciate this.
You did it again Sanderson. As the first book of this serie, I don't know where we are going with this serie. I don't really care because I am just enjoying every minute of the read. Some people could consider it slow paced but the universe building and character psychology is so good that you just want to spend more time in this universe.
I Though this book was really interesting, well built and def helped me question further my bias and consideration of my own position as a white person in a race based society.
My regret is that I would have love to find a kind of discussion with an expert, who is a POC. It makes me want to read more an educate myself further, but not with a book not written by a white author.
An amazing and well built fantasy standalone. So sad to see that the other serie by the same author has been discontinued or I would have jump straight back in this universe.
A great character centered story about duty, tradition and sacrifice with an amazing elementary magic system. Highly recommend this read !
Sharing insights from history and testimonies, this book brings so much perspective on the inaccessibility in the world of design.
It's not only about graphic design but about exclusions, euro-centered beauty criteria, hiring processes, power structures, mentoring, workplace discrimination and more...
I would highly recommend to anyone to read this and especially if you feel you can't fit in this world. You do.
Sadly, my difficulty to get involved in the story due to its absolute complexity lasted till the end of this book.
I still feel like I missed so many things. I feel at the end this complexity ( especially the vocabulary) didn't add anything to the story.
Still a 3,5 because it is good but oh my it is difficult to read.
This book is indisputably a great book.
The universe is so original, character well built, diverse etc... I've for sure never read anything similar.
But the writing was so difficult for me to get in.
The complexity of the informations you have to compute was important and due to English not being my first language I had difficulties to get in.
It is not a light reading !!
I am really curious to know what's going to happen in the next book now that I am more familiar with the all context. Would definitely recommend but not to people new to fantasy or reading in english.
4,5 ⭐️
What a surprise!
Really didn't expected that. I am not found of retelling but I loved this vision of the Arthurian legend and its inheritance.
I loved to read with a young African-American girl as the main character and openly talking about the racisms and discrimination she has to endure everyday ( even when you live in a world with magic).
This was so good. Highly recommend.
This is not my kind of book but it was picked in the book club so I gave it a try.
I was not ready to be unable to put it down. The story of Evelyn Hugo was haunting me when I was not reading and I couldn't wait to know the full story of her life.
This was amazing. The character felt so real and will for sure stay with me.
