I'm giving this novel 4 stars for its surprising and enjoyable plot.
It doesn't take too long to realize that this novel is written in the spirit of Christie's “And Then There Were None”. Stranded at their nana's house, the Darker's die while their secrets are discovered. There are so many twists and turns that even if you think you saw some coming, there will be others to surprise you.
This is a nice read for mystery lovers that I highly recommend.
I'm giving this novel 4 stars rating.
This is a book that presents the disparity between two sisters raised under difficult circumstances. One becomes a cop patrolling the streets where she grew up, the other falls victim to drugs and prostitution. All of this amid a series of killings of women working the streets.
This is a novel where you experience many of the problems affecting society from the point of view of Mickey, the protagonist, who is conflicted by her past, her own secrets, her love for her sister, and her own troubles.
If you like stories with complex characters, and not at all predictable, this book is for you.
I'll give this book three stars.
The plot wasn't bad, but it develops in predictable ways. At the end, everything that you assume will happen does happen. Overall is not a bad novel, but if you're an avid mystery reader, you'll see all the twists and turns coming, and it will feel a little disappointing.
If you have something else to read, you can probably skip this one.
Five stars for this sci-fi novel that you should read.
I don't give 5 stars freely willy. I reserve them for books that everyone should read once. This is one of those books.
The story in this book happens in the future. Many things have happened in the world, and people are interconnected in stronger ways than you can imagine today. There are pros and there are cons.
This book depicts a future that has a lot of similarities with the world today, but from a completely distinct perspective. Still, the good and bad of people remains the same, which is why you'll find in familiar situations and thinking, “Everyone should read this”.
A highly recommendable novel that you should read.
Four stars for this highly recommendable novel.
I've read several Brianna Labuskes mystery thrillers, so I decided to try this historical fiction novel. This is not a genere that would normally choose, much less when the period is WWII because I get really upset about nazis.
But this book is really a love story, which is another genere that I don't follow. One that plays in the midst of WWII in Germany, and it does something that WWII books rarely do, which is depicting some of the German citizens as victims also. Not every German was on the side of Hitler, and many followed him because they were scared.
I have enjoyed this book quite a bit even when it doesn't have the twist and turns of a mystery thriller. The book is written from the point of view of three women at three different points in time between 1938 and 1946. As the plot moves forward the stories come together, sometimes in unexpected ways, which keeps the reader flipping pages.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something different.
Four stars for the new Myron Bolitar novel.
Another good novel involving Myron and Win solving a mystery. And like most Coben's novels, the plot moves fast and keeps you intrigued all the way to the end, with a few last-minute twists and turns to surprise you.
There are a few things that bother me about Myron and Win's background, but after 12 books, I've learned to live with them. This might not be the case for new readers. For example, Myron was a college basketball superstar who never made it to the NBA because of an injury. Still, he's more famous and recognizable than Michael Jordan. On top of that, he and Win were involved with the FBI and trained in a bunch of stuff?
Don't get me wrong, I like those characters, especially Win. But these are things that are front and center in this book, and they might be hard to swallow for first time readers of the series.
Overall, a solid Myron story which is a must read for fans, and highly recommendable to others.
Four stars for this new Jack Reacher novel.
This one is more like the Reacher books that we are used to. After a few of them where the story was very repetitive, this one goes back in time to when Reacher was still serving for a multi-agency investigation.
The plot moves at a fast pace keeping the reader engaged from the beginning. Like any other in the series, Reacher becomes critical to solve the mystery at the end.
If you are a fan of Reacher novels, this one is a must read. It is also very recommendable for thriller lovers.
I can only give three stars to this novel.
Much like the second book in the series, or maybe because of it, this book was hard to finish. It took me quite a while to read it because the story is uninteresting. It does have a little more action than the second book, but that's not hard to achieve.
I cannot recommend this novel.
I cannot give this book any more than 3 stars, and I feel it's generous.
This is the second book in the series. The first one, “Her Name is Knight”, is a great thriller with a very unique story. This one, not so much.
I picked this book because I gave the first one 5 stars. I only give 5 stars to books that I would recommend to anyone because I believe everyone should read them. Particularly good books, I give them 4 stars, and I recommend them to people interested in the book's genre. Furthermore, the average rating of this book is higher than the first. That part I cannot believe it. This book is boring.
You don't believe me? Pick it up. You'll see that nothing happens until after two thirds of the book. The entire novel is a recap of the first one, and I should say, a poorly recap of the first book and the characters in it, many of whom are dead in the timeline of this book.
Do yourself a favor and skip this book. Unfortunately, I already bought book #3 and I'm going to start it now. Otherwise, I would not finish this series.
Four stars for this charming novel that you should read if you like suspense.
This is the second book about Molly the Maid, and just like the first one, the story is charming and develops in interesting ways. The truth is that I love Molly's character even though I can't really explain why. I feel for her, and I root for her, and I always have a smile on my face with her actions and reactions.
I think that if you're into suspense novels, this is a book, and a series, that you want to read.
Four stars for this espionage thriller.
I don't usually read espionage books, but this one had good reviews and I believe it was the only one from Amazon First Reads that had a high rating. I picked it up, and it didn't disappoint.
The story jumps across generations showing how friends become enemies, and a race to stop a massive terrorist attack that has, somehow, relevance in today's world panorama.
If you're into spy novels, you should read this book.
Three stars for this novel.
I did enjoy reading this book quite a bit. The story grabs you right at the beginning when Ruby finds a floating body in the lake near her community. From there, the plot moves fast and keeps you entertained all the way until about two thirds when you start seeing the ending coming.
Once you get to the end, the book leaves you with a sensation that everything was too easy. There are many small details that never get fully resolved or explained. Altogether, it feels like the ending was rushed and the easy way out was taken.
Still, you might enjoy the ride even if the end is not as good as the rest of the book.
I'm giving it 4 stars mostly because it's very repetitive.
This book could've easily be a 5 star for me, but unfortunately, it is very repetitive with the background information and the character building. It continuously brings the same things from previous books, all the way to Mr. Mercedes. I understand some readers might be new to the story, but the repetition in this book is too much and unnecessary making it just a longer book.
As a matter of fact, the story in this book is so good and scary, that it would be good even without any background information. But we all know the author likes to write very long novels.
This is a book that you should read and that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
Four stars review for this engaging psychological thriller.
The story is told from the perspective of three different women. The daughter, the love interest, and the victim. What can Aidan get away with? Turns out, a lot. This novel has a unique plot that will keep you turning pages until you get to the end. Even when some parts might seem far-fetched at first, the psychological factor that comes into play with the main characters will help you buy into their actions.
This is highly recommended for lovers of psychological thrillers.
I'm giving four stars to this one because I feel generous today.
This novel feels like a children's book, and if it wasn't because of a few paragraphs here and there, it would really be one. There's no thrills nor chills in this book. Everything, at the end, goes well as you would expect. Way too easy!
The book is certainly different, and you should read it just because.
Three-stars for effort.
For some reason, this book didn't get to engage me in the way that I would have liked. There are many distractions from the main story that don't improve the book or have any relevance. I've never seen two characters fall in love as quick and with as little interaction between them than in this book. I guess is a good book for love at first sight believers.
I cannot recommend this book.
Three stars for this one, which means you can skip it if you like.
Turns out, I always give three stars to Luanne Rice's books. Granted, they are high threes, but still. It's hard to say what is missing that doesn't make the book better. Overall, it's a quick read that many readers will enjoy, but there's nothing memorable about it, which I guess is the reason I cannot go higher with my rating.
If you're a Luanne Rice fan, you'll probably enjoy this one. For me, it's skippable.
Just three stars for this very flat story.
There are no surprises on this book. If the story is leading you towards “A” from the beginning, any reader will know that “A” is not true. The magic happens when there's is a range of possibilities “B”, “C”, “D”, etc. In this book, the only other option, all the way until the end, is “B” and that's exactly how it ends. No surprises.
You can perfectly skip this one.
Four stars for this surprising novel.
This is a very good story with some twists and turns and a surprising ending. The story moves at a quick pace that keeps the reader engaged, and the plot is well developed providing information as needed to keep the book enjoyable.
Unfortunately, forensic linguistics is not the most interesting of sciences. The author keeps explaining what it's about providing examples throughout the book. And even with all those explanations, it is hard to understand how you can use it to solve a mystery.
This is one of those books that I enjoyed but make be doubt about the series. Still, you should read it because it is a surprising story.
I have to give 5 stars to this book that left me completely satisfied.
I really enjoyed this book. An interesting story of strength, friendship, and survival led by interesting female characters, it contains many teachable moments that make this book a must read for everyone.
The book shows the contrast in small communities where everyone knows each other. It reflects sense of community when people come together to help those in need. And it perfectly depicts those afraid of those who are different, scared of the things they don't understand, and how the hide behind a vail of religion that makes them feel righteous in their opinions.
I recommend this book to everyone because we all have something to learn from it.
Four stars for this one.
You can get picky with the story and complain about the many things that are not realistic about this book, or you can just sit down and enjoy it. I chose the latter and found myself enjoying the story and Kate Green.
A suspenseful story about a murder where the police, like many times, go for the easy conviction instead of following all the leads. Thankfully Kate, the amateur slug, jumps in to protect her best friend and prove them wrong, or are they?
An interesting story with a surprising ending that you should read if you like suspenseful thrillers.
I'm feeling generous, so I'm giving 4 stars to this one.
I haven't read the first book on the series, so that might have impacted my initial perception of this novel. I felt the story started a bit slow, and no really character development was going on.
Once you get the hang of it, everything starts to make sense and the story is kind of funny. Still, I'm not sure I'm going to get into the entire series.
I'm giving it three-stars because, from the beginning, you know where this is going.
The book starts slow and confusing. There are several story lines that are mixed in a way that make any part of the story hard to follow. As the book progresses, you start to see who is who, but the book moves slowly, and the story doesn't get any better.
The author chooses to put the most important event in the story half way through the book. What should've been the beginning happens after, what I assume to be, a very slow main character building.
At the end, everything that happens after the main event is predictable, and you see the ending coming from miles ahead.
I cannot recommend this book, so if you have something else to read you can skip it.
Four stars for this must read for psychological thriller lovers.
This is a book that grabs you from the beginning with the chilling story of Josie. As Josie records her story for a podcast produced by the main character Alix, who's Josie's birthday twin, you realize that something is wrong with her caused by the trauma in her life, but then again, “None of this is True”.
Several twists and turns will keep you embedded in the story all the way to the end. Who's saying the truth? Who's lying? That's for you to decide.
I highly recommend this book for psychological thriller lovers.
