I could not get into his book. Although the setting was refreshing and fun, I did not care about the characters nor their goal.
Really 4.5. This is a great second book in the Powder Mage series. The characters grow deeper and the pressure builds up nicely. Tons of action with hand to hand combat and full-scale military battles. A very good political scheming backdrop as the sides use high stakes to take over Adro. The chapter structure sometimes throws me off, wishing that the three major characters POV paragraphs would be split or have a divider to help me switch. Overall, I can't wait to read [b:The Autumn Republic 20883847 The Autumn Republic (Powder Mage, #3) Brian McClellan https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1393261950l/20883847.SY75.jpg 40224712] and see what happens to Tamas, Taniel, and Adamat.
I really don't know why I struggled through this book. I tended to want to read other things instead of finish this one. I liked the story. Some parts were great, some parts were slow. I probably won't continue on with The Broken Earth series.
This book lacked imagination and writing skill. It's as if the writer had an idea, but didn't know how to logically fit the pieces together. The characters all have a general lack of development which make them uninteresting. I will not read anything else from this author.
Great book with a more satisfying ending than Gone Girl. I'm starting to think I'm going to like anything [a:Gillian Flynn 2383 Gillian Flynn https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1232123231p2/2383.jpg] writes. I will be adding more of her books to my To Read list for 2020.
Slow start, exciting middle, abrupt ending. Main characters were interesting. I'm guessing the authors consider the whole series as a cohesive story and just stopped book one when they reached a certain number of chapters.
The author kept me in the dark for half the book which kept me from caring about what was happening in the second half. Poor writing and names that are unpronounceable took away from the world the author had built. I don't think I will continue to [b:Deadhouse Gates 55401 Deadhouse Gates (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, #2) Steven Erikson http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1316126263s/55401.jpg 3898716].
