Several months after re-reading: Honestly, despite making me tear up once, this book really only deserves a two-stars, for me personally, mainly since Sam creeped me out WAY too much, and sounded like a teenage girl (a REALLY angsty one at that).
——————————————
After re-reading this book this Novermber of 2011, I think this book deserves a 3.5/5 stars, only because this time around it made me tear up a little.
———————-
I read this book back in November of 2010 (or in December according to Goodreads), and I thought it was simply good (which is a 4/5 stars for me) and it was my second paranormal romance book (my first was Hush, Hush), so the cliches and predictability wasn't striking me.
Honestly, there's one really bad thing about this book, the reason it drops from a 4/5 to a 3/5 - it's not that memorable. I honestly cannot remember about half the ending of the book, and that's the part I usually remember most about a book. I remember the most important stuff, the stuff that I should remember (SPOILER ALERT): Sam changes back to a human, Jack dies, and that's really it. I also can't remember any of the middle, I don't remember who was more important, Rachel or Olivia (they weren't really that important, but one was more so than the other) and it's all some strange jumble of - “Did that happen?” “When did that happen?” “Did I really like this book?” “Was Grace annoying?” “Was Sam annoying?” Way too many questions about things to be memorable.
The only character I honestly remember liking was Isabel (is that how you spell her name?) and that was because she was sarcastic and rude, but helpful at the same time. Reminds me a lot of Caine Soren from the Gone series. Grace is forgettable, Sam was too perfect now that I honestly think of it, Grace's parents were too frustrating, and Becks was weird.
Maggie Stiefvater shines best with one thing in this book at best: her beautiful, gorgeous, vivid writing style. It definitely conveys emotions beautifully, and it definitely paints a picture of the heart, and really could touch your heart, and makes the romance a bit more bearable.
Which leads into the romance section of the book. It wasn't as disgusting and cliche as stuff like Fallen or Evermore, but I will get into that. It's definitely beautiful, and is sweet, but it really isn't much more than that. It doesn't give you butterflies in your heart, or make your heart soar, like it did for Grace and Sam, but I wouldn't say it'll make you want to throw up.
The ending of this book makes me a little bit weary to keep reading on with the series, because for me at least, Shiver gives me one thing at best: a satisfying, full ending. It does leave some questions open, which are suggested in this book: why didn't Grace turn into a wolf when she was attacked as a child, why did Sam survive and not Jack, and several other questions that I believe aren't fully explored at all during the series. However, while Shiver isn't the best book around, it by far isn't the worst.
The only reason I'm writing this review though is simply because I will be re-reading Shiver so that I can remember the book enough to read Linger, which is the second book in the series. This is my opinion, and my opinion alone, so I'd be very appreciative if you respected that opinion, like I respect the opinion of others.
Official Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Not as good as [b:Secret Vampire 395873 Secret Vampire (Night World, #1) L.J. Smith http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1218045708s/395873.jpg 385370], but a much more pleasant experience than [b:The Awakening 395922 The Awakening (The Vampire Diaries, #1) L.J. Smith http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266542802s/395922.jpg 1659113].
I WANT THIS SO BAD! And The Eternity Cure better still be coming out in 2013 as well, since I need to know what happens next!!!
God, I never thought I'd be saying that over a Julie Kagawa book.
I read this in about 30 seconds, and then read it two more times just because I could.
Let's just say it was very funny.
EDIT (3/27/13): WHAT?! I much preferred the 575+ page count to this new 432 page count. I just can't bare the thought of these books ending sooner than they have to. >.<
April 2nd can not get here fast enough!
SECOND READING (3/18/12): 3
I liked it more than the first time, but it could've been better.
FIRST READING (4/17/11): The plot was original, but I didn't understand the characters motivations, didn't care for the characters themselves, wasn't very interested, and some of the explanations were not clear. And some of the memories they talk about I don't even remember happening - I'll read on, but it's definitely not a mandatory series to read for me at the moment.
How the heck does this even remotely match Shatter Me?! Cover designers, pick one style for the series, not three different!
Jaw drops
There are BOOKS?! I just saw the first two episodes on Netflix, and while I was two parts disturbed, I was totally hooked.
Point being: I. MUST. READ.
This was actually a really clever short story. Incredibly original - I wish there was a longer piece for it.
Merged review:

Simply put, the only book that has ever made kept me up reading until 3:00 in the morning. Do with that information what you will to understand my love of this book.
I'm just happy that he's publishing something really soon, because after [b:Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock 13477676 Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock Matthew Quick http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1370282544s/13477676.jpg 19008613], I need more of this guy's books. Good thing I still have two others I haven't read yet.
Also read this one for a class - it's an interesting little story with a twist at the end. I don't know if the twist was properly laid out, and it felt like we were being asked to recontextualize the story in a way that wasn't consistent at all with the story. I love an unreliable narrator, but I think the suspension of disbelief was a little too strong with this one - but I think I could be talked into it.
Kind of pointless, since only one important thing happened the entire time. Thank God when I pre-ordered it I got it for free, since it wasn't worth anything more.
I'm willing to forget I read anything about a love triangle in the summary, and be excited for the rest of it (since it does sound fantastic).
3.5 stars
This is a quick, enticing short story with an inevitable twist at the end. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's engaging, well-written, and gets right to the point.
EDIT (7/21/12): 2013?!!

Ugh, I know it's supposed to come out this summer, but can we at least get a release date?!
NetGalley had this up for request (probably movie promotion) so of course I requested it since I'm #3 on the waiting list at the library, but it's taking forever, and . . .
THEY ACCEPTED ME!
Read this a couple years ago, rememer really enjoying it. Really good middle grade action/fantasy/horror read.
