So boring and so much racism.

I disagree, but it's great.

It's great, but there is no plot and no character development, be warned!

Its good, but I thought it would be better

Precise, yet poetic language
Great character study.
No plot.

I thought I would like this more. I like the focus on class and politics in this cult environment, but the characters fell a bit flat for me and I thought the book could be 250 pages shorter. I prefer her short stories.

So much fun!

This book is a lot of work and felt gimmicky in parts. But: It is also layered and rewarding and like nothing else I have ever read!

Takes the idea of the Doppelgänger in many different, often surprising directions.

When it comes to talking about race, this book is not great. When it comes to the rest, it is.

If you like the desperation of A Little Life, but want it not told by a straight woman, this might be for you. Only read if elephant skin seems thin to you.

I am fully on board with the content and message, but struggling quite a bit with the structure.

Pulpy, in the best way.

A poetic and subtle reflection on what it means to be human. Because of the strict format/concept it sometimes gets a bit repetitive, but as it is so short that didn't really bother me.

skin like freshly pressed olives??!
its fine. not more, not less.

Amazing storytelling and language, not so great in the portrayal of women and people of colour.

As a person who does not read romance I found this surprisingly charming.

I haven't read YA since being a teen and I have zero regret. Cathartic and queer as hell!

Everyone is horrible.

Having a bit more information on Badiou's thinking might be helpful to truly appreciate this text. I wanted more context to each of the lectures, but it is a nice introduction to some of bis ideas. Enjoyed the combination of philosophy and poetry.

  • needs a closer reading, really challenging language, but also full of humour
    - shifts between philosophy, poetry and memoir

I loved the protagonist, the lens of female mystics and the snark.
Not convinced of the James/Blandine storyline.
