This book made my heart so happy. Well, it made my heart angry a bit. But then so happy! I think taking a break between books is exactly what I needed to once again fully appreciate how amazing these books are.
And. They also help reinforce my ridiculous expectations when it comes to falling in love. And who can resist that?
I came very close to not finishing this book. But by this point, I was already very invested in the characters. But the world building? It just wasn't for me.
In this third installment of the BZRK trilogy, things are even crazier than in the second. In the aftermath of the destruction of “the Doll Ship” the Armstrong Twins are set on revenge. Sadie - “Plath” - has been elevated to leader of the BZRK group after Vincent lost most of his sanity after one of his biots was destroyed.
And suddenly, we're introduced to a new player - Lystra Read - and a seemingly new game.
It was hard to keep up with. I couldn't tell who was who (though I did figure out the big reveal before it was revealed) or what was happening in some instances.
And the ending? Well it was disappointing, to say the least.
I like my books where the bad guy is the bad guy and the good guy is the good guy. There may be some shades of gray mixed in, but in this series it's so mixed up it's grayer than gray.
I am so very frustrated right now.
I've been on a serious re-reading kick for the last several months. We Are the Goldens is the first new book I've picked up to read since I can remember. I was really hoping to be blown out of the water.
But I wasn't.
The book was interesting enough to keep me turning the page, but when I got to the final page it really felt as if there should be more pages. The story is one where Nell, the younger sister, keeps her older sister Layla's secret until she just can't do it anymore.
But we don't get to see the fall out from that secret. And let me tell you - it's the kind of secret that's a Big. Fucking. Deal. Even though you figure out the secret very early in the book, before it's confirmed.
The story I wanted to read was about how the secret - and its consequences - affected the sibling relationship.
The story I got was simply a younger sister complaining about how her sister is different until she can't hold onto the secret any longer. The end.
I needed more to really connect with the story and the characters. This book only scratched the surface, and it left me feeling disappointed and a little bit as if I wasted my time with it.
