DNF at 10%. It just...didn't seem that well written. Love the idea of a cursed main character and her curse specifically was a unique idea. but i wasn't really pulled in with the first few chapters. also, i'm tired of thief/robber/illegal den urban fantasy MCs. give me a slightly more creative backstory haha. maybe i'll retry this in a few months.
This has quickly become one of my comfort books.
Setting: regency-like era but in a European city (Rhysdon) that doesn't exist in our world.
Quincy - a prickly young lady who runs the nation's most prominent newspaper, "The Q" - finds out she can't keep running it unless she accomplishes a list of things set out by her deceased uncle. Except she doesn't know what the list contains. And she has no patience for fluff of any kind.
Her uncle taked the printing press' handsome young solicitor, James Arch, with monitoring Quincy's progress on the list. Arch is about as happy about this as Quincy is.
I cannot recommend this book enough. A comedy(?) intermixed with deep commentary on human welfare, loss, love, and the costs of opening your heart.
Dnf at 60%. I was very torn on this because i LOVED the romance set up - that it's friends/almost lovers to enemies to lovers again. Verrrry cool set up. I think I just couldn't get into the story because the dialogue felt a little cringey and the characters felt flat. Maybe i'll try this again in a few months and end up loving it.
I can't do it. I tried. Historical fiction is my least favorite genre ever. My blood pressure can't handle it. This genre is too depressing. Also the dialogue felt sooo stilted. If I was vienne and my crazy sister was endangering the safety of my 8 year child in front of nazi soldiers i think I would have been a lot more mad but idk
this book might've been good but i'm just tired of male leads who have/had a mistress and then got rid of the mistress because their moms told them too. not because they changed or decided to be more honorable. it's not making for a great foundation of character or for a male lead's story that I'm actually interested in
i started this book, then stopped after the first 40 pages because reading about all the terrible husbands she describes made me too mad. then adam read it after i said i couldn't finish (lol) and said it was actually good later on. which was true. some helpful parts later on. of course all this is being read with no context for actually having kids yet but overall a fine read
Oof. I remember LOVING this book in high school. Rereading it, I realized that 1. the male lead prince and his cousin the princess are ENGAGED, not just cousins, and 2., he's a cheater?? and Seraphina has literally no self respect? Also how did she fall for him so fast? nothing happens and all of the sudden she's 100% in? AND Kiggs has given NO sign that he likes her back but she still thinks it's appropriate to confess to him?
If this book were from the point of view of her uncle Orma i think it would be perfect. he was the funniest character. also Kigg's fiancee (Gisselda? Grisela?) was the best and i think the book should also be about her.
I'm just still caught up at the end when Kiggs is like “yes i love u. but also you know I'll probably still have to marry my cousin, right?” and Seraphina is like “of course.” ??? girl plz have some self respect. walk away. there's a billion guys in this world who would be better
