I read this back in high school and thought it was interesting. Mostly I'm a fan of the fmc not ending up with the first guy she likes - love that!!! need 5000% of that in more of the books I read
this time around i started on chapter 20ish since thats when rice shows up. however the descriptions were awkward and i know it's supposed to be spicy but i couldn't take most of the book seriously, too many adverbs. also not a fan of making violent mmcs sexy? when you take a step back and look at the male characters, 0% of them are actually good people? like they're good compared to each other but that's about it?
but i do understand why people like this series. considering reading book #2
This was a super fun refreshing urban fantasy read. The author did a great job of worldbuilding and i loved all of the characters. especially adrian the nice witch and bex's motley crew of demons. my one complaint is that i'm a big fan of drawing out secret identities as long as possible for the Drama, and i wish bex's identity as one of the queens of hell was revealed in the next book or even later. overall a great time
This was definitely worth the hype, I haven't laughed out loud so much while reading a book in months. Both Draco and Hermione are hilariously characterized. Draco's internal commentary almost made me cry i was laughing so hard.
Obviously due to the rating there were some content parts I 100% skipped for personal choices but overall it's a great read
W.R. Gingell has a beautiful and very complicated writing style, which i enjoyed in this book because it slows down my reading so i actually know whats going on.
Alexander and Isabella's relationship was soooo funny in this book, i loved their banter and that they seem to annoy each other for 85% of the book...... but the subtext and ending suggest otherwise.
surprisingly gory but i haven't read any of the other books in this series yet so maybe that's normal.
overall a great read and i will probably read it again sometime to enjoy the banter
holy freaking crap THE ENDING
aoisdjf ads;
i had to just sit on the couch in silence
there were two pages left and i didn't think anything crazy couldl happen in two pages but i was WRONG
there were some excellent scenes between our two favorite detective partners but that last scene really took the cake and i cant believe there's not another book out yet for me to find out what happens next
im really dead
overall a great mystery novel, the cult was pretty scary but honestly easy to not get caught up in, i'll have to re-read again to figure out all the hints
dang
EDIT: I finally got around to finishing this, and I didn't love it. I was so tired of everyone except the female lead Harriet. Wak or whatever the male lead's name is, Sabrina, Sabrina's fiance were all annoying. I just wanted Harriet to leave and go live her own wonderful life because no one else felt worth missing...except maybe Kimmy and her girlfriend (Cloe? I can't remember), they were actually interesting and had healthy boundaries with everyone else. I was also waiting for the big reveal that Harrier and Wen(Wak? Wal?) had already broken up because that was such a juicy and dramatic premise... and then it turns out Sabrina knew the whole time. Nasty move on Sabrina's part. Blegh. idk, I'm a big fan of Emily Henry but this has been my least fave out of her books so far.
WYN - I just looked it up. Harriet's man's name is Wyn
First review: it was a great story but dnf ~50% bc it was too spicy for me lol and i didn't feel like skipping
DNF at 53%
The book was fine. Some parts were poorly written, some parts were better. Overall I have no desire to finish it
The good and bad:
- Violet's character was inconsistent between the first chapter and the later chapters (i kept waiting for her sickliness and TRAVAIL of HEALTH to hold her back but she seems fine?? in fact there seems to be nothing she CAN'T do, apart from being short. but I was disappointed by the delivery, since was such a huge emphasis on her weakness and being sicky in the beginning that I was pretty confused by the end of the first few chapters because that was never actually shown... as being a problem...Cmon, give me actual struggle here.)
- The part where violet tells Dain off was VERY satisfying, Dain SUCKED. Great job here
- The main guy (Xerxes? I think his name started with an X or a Z) very cool, no issues here. romance was fine.
- Mostly just DNF bc I felt like the characters were so inconsistent, especially violet, and it irked me. Also I was gonna have to start skipping scenes because the spice level was increasing lol
- I have no issues with multicolored hair on the female MC but it was giving 13-year-old fan fiction vibes
- Magic system never explained????? Just statements of fact without actual explanations.
- It's obvious from the start of the book that Violet is going to get a cool dragon, so none of that reveal felt amazing - it was so obvious that she was special , and while that doesn't have to ruin the reveal... the reveal didn't make up for it. yes of course she's going to get the mated dragon so her and the ML are even more special. and TWO dragons... idk I feel like I would've liked the story better if she'd just gotten the small baby dragon and had to scrape by with that.
Second time reading this. Love the secret identity trope. Still had a hard time keeping track of all the places and ruler names but overall a great book
some small issues i had -
essiya talks for WAY too long after being stabbed in the chest, that whole conversation with her evil maid lady felt drawn out. like she has a knife in her. why did they talk for 15 minutes before essiya finally fainted/fell out of the window(?)
i already forgot the ML's name but i felt like they needed even slower of a slow burn, the attraction felt sudden
but it's still a great book, i'm verrry excited for the sequel
