4+/5. What a delicious read! I saw the movie a few years before so I kind of knew the gist of what's gonna happen, but the ‘gotcha' moment turned out so much better than I expected. I was played like a fool and I loved it. The final chapters I feel were a bit dragged out but fitting nonetheless.
P/S: The movie adaptation was casted PERFECTLY. Picturing Ben Affleck as Nick made the experience so much more thrilling.
2/5. Pages after pages I was waiting for the tension to build up, for the fire to burn, but instead of flaming, somewhere midway I realized that it was only going to fizzle out. The generational drama is unfortunately kept to the surface level, lost in an abundance of side characters that I feel should not have been given that much attention. Family drama is my favorite genre, shame to say that this book doesn't deliver.
2.5/5.
I finished this book unconvinced of why the main characters feel the need to be so attached to one another, despite their numerous professions of love. Maybe that's the purpose of the story, that they're young and confused about their feelings. I also believe that their toxic tendencies truly deserve each other.
The writing is simplistic, VERY attentive to details, almost movie-script like. Many important plotlines are glossed over and unexplained. I do feel there's something left to be desired and hope that the TV show can tell the story better.
