Oh god I loved this.
This book is like getting to know a person. And I truly couldn't stand Eleanor at the beginning, but then you kinda uncover why she is the way she is and start to empathise with her. It's about the safety of routines, rationalising, importance of friendship (bless Raymond honestly), how little things can change your life, acceptance, therapy and change.
This is a book for anybody who has experience with family trauma or trauma in general or is patient enough to get to know a person stuck with their own demons, unknowingly. She is after all, completely fine.
The story is pretty scattered and I wasn't sure what and who to pay attention to.
The tension/mystery aspect felt super inconsistent. There was a “countdown” dowards someone dying and then we find out it was the asshole who made like a single appearance being abusive. Not really a shocker and not a pity. Phoebe as a POV character was absolutely forgettable to me. But. I love Knox. I love Maeve and I cared about their storylines a lot. I liked the cameos by the heroes from the first book. And it all came together in the end. And somehow it still managed to keep me glued to the pages and elicit feels in me. So 4*

I am not the target audience. This is more for people who see the word “feminism” and scream and run.
The “essays” ranged from anecdotes related to the female experience, but didn't really touch on feminism itself (Kat Dennings) to deeper analyses of the fear of feminism (Alison Sudol). I think it was the word “essay” that lead me to expect a more consistent mix of writings - like everybody writing what feminism meant to them personally or how they got involved with feminism etc. But after a weak start (sorry Evanna Lynch, but seeing JKR mentioned as a feminist rolemodel in 2022 is pretty yikes) there are some cool segments. I was kind of put off but by the end of the book, I'd say it's not An Essential, but an interesting read, if you want to broaden your horizons on people active in the movement and areas it addresses. If you're a seasoned feminist like me and want to engage w this book, I'd recommend these pieces of writing:Lolly Adefope - intersection of gender and race, bonus points for the story format, drops the mic at the endAlison Sudol - Good questions, analysis of fear of the F word (feminism), dipping her toe into the cult of the Divine Feminine but overall good points Charlie Craggs - trans woman's storyAlaa Murabit- a surgeon who founded the Voice of Libyan Women organisation, her essay includes data on the positive effects of inclusion of womenAmani Al-Khatahtbeh- A list of straight-to-the-point messages from a muslim womanJameela Jamil - essay about the importance of not holding yourself back and educating men about feminism, both its history and present state, and dismantling toxic masculinity as a part of the feminist movement ♥ probably my faveKeira Knightley - the naturalism of motherhood and childbirthLydia Wilson- women's bodies as public propertyAkilah Hughes- because I'm a sucker for playlistsGrace Campbel - a poem about masturbation/pleasureAlice Wroe- cool stories about historical groups of womenClaire Horn - short history of feminismEmma Watson - a reading list, I can't miss on including thatThis book is 2018, JKR started being a truly prominent TERF in 2020, so this is not a call out of Evanna just as a sidenote
I kind of like the writing. I love the short chapters. I feel like the beginning was strong and the stakes of Mystery were set high. The ending does have this sort of shock value but it still feels like a puzzle piece that doesn't quite fit with the rest.
I feel like there's very little plot besides the Mystery. Which means there's quite a few empty spots that are just...boring. Although the vibe of a place and time kind of covered in brainfog does fit the narrative, it's not enough to truly draw you in. The reimagined fairytales and dramatic analogies of Cadence's pain weren't terrific, but it was a nice shift from the bland narrative going through most of the book.
2,5*
I don't really know what to make of this book. It was kind of shallow and repetitive. The reviews say it's funny - I have no idea where.
The only interesting part was when the protagonist started doing things during her blackout, I thought that would also lead somewhere but nope. And the backstory into her miserable childhood and parents was also intriguing.
Didn't really get the ending either. Dunno, maybe just not a book for me. So far I've read 2 contemporary super popular books and I didn't like either
It's incrdible this book was written when it was written. Adressing cleverly all of the bullshit that was told about women throughout history and disassembling all the excuses for and ways of misogyny. Hope this book gets more recognition, as it's the perfect predecessor for Brave New World or Handmaid's Tale.
I don't understand why is this so popular. The main characters are super unlikable and flat, side characters just blend into each other as none of them have a personality (except for Lorraine, I actually liked her). I understand the stylistic and perhaps somehow symbolic choice of not using quotation marks but it makes the book just hard to read and it wasn't good enough for that to be justifiable in my opinion. If it was supposed to be about relationship between the two heroes and how they get together and then leave and then get together again - I simply couldn't care less about them or their relationship. Plus the long bland descriptions of the most mundane actions... Boring and not worth your time
