So... I knew this going into another Stirling book. He takes an incredibly cool idea... and just... grinds it into dust with so much detail and repetition. There's only so many times I can read a character's thought process about a technological innovation that's going to do so and so and I get it, I get the idea, seriously, but my god man, learn to edit this down. I loved the Emberverse series until like book 200 or so and I *dearly* hope this series doesn't make the same mistake. I'll read book three of course, but after I'll probably just find a summary.
It was good... I guess? I think I was expecting something as impactful as The Handmaid's Tale and frankly, this isn't it. It does give you more information about Gilead and that's ok I guess, but outside of that, it isn't that's great. To be honest, I think you could read a Wikipedia summary and get just as much out of it. The best I can say about it is that makes me want to read The Handmaid's Tale again.
