"Are you happy here?" I said at last. He considered this for a moment. "Not particularly," he said. "But you're not very happy where you are, either."
what I love most about this book is that although there's a definite plot line and series of important events, the most compelling part of the book is the characters and how they all intertwine. it's incredibly easy for an author to make you support a cast of characters, but donna tartt writes each character so well and so in-depth that you leave the story wondering if they were ever genuine at any point. although I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending (or the time jump—when will they learn? 😔) my disappointment was greatly made up for in beautiful writing and rich character exploration. francis abernathy served cunt in every single scene he was in.
there are a lot of things I wish I could take from this book and engrave into my brain as a keepsake for the rest of my life. often times throughout the story I wondered why we centred around jude so much and I found myself almost wishing his trauma wasn't so heavily emphasised, but I always knew—and the book always implied—that jude is the story. a little lifetime of healing and breaking and sacrifice and injustice and laughter and horror and tears, tears, tears. I can't remember any other time I've properly cried at the ending of a book, but good god did I weep at those final lines. ZERO NOTES MISS HANYA
…now I hate to say this, but not my favourite george orwell read by a long shot, but I'll forever give it its flowers because holy shit is it brilliant; I forget that this was literally written in the 1940s. admittedly the story is pretty slow to start, but I will never give mister orwell less than 4 stars I love you king x
this book was like a train wreck in the sense that it was so disturbing but I could not look away. you get shoved into the plot and the universe right away which I always love in a book, also the PLOT TWIST IN PART 2 I audibly gasped and got out of my mf chair that was insane. all around LOVED and it’s definitely one to read again and analyse
