See allI quite enjoyed reading it. It's exactly what the title promises: 50 Q&As. Each topic goes into enough detail to keep you interested but not enough to lose your interest. I've learnt a few things and even made some notes on books and movies suggestions. I was afraid it would be biased towards China (naturally, as the author is Chinese) but it wasn't. The author makes arguments for and against China in multiple chapters. Why only 4 stars then?
I bought the book directly from the authors' website. I was promised both PDFs and ePub version as per the description 'Format: Digital Download (PDF & EPUB) – accessible on any device'. Unfortunatelly, I was only given a PDF download. When I reached out via email about this issue, even after 2 weeks of waiting I never heard back from the author. I had to convert the PDF to ePub myself and unfortunately, the formatting isn't the same which makes reading the book a little harder and therefore less enjoyable. I thought supporting the author directly instead of going through Amazon would result in a much better customer exerpience whilst helping him out. I was wrong.
Apart from that, I highly recommend the book to anyone who would like to learn a little more about China without having to read through a 300 page history book.
I never heard of the author but the cover caught my attention and when I read the brief description I was interested. I gave it a quick read whilst in the shop to check out the style. It read easily and I thought it might be worth a read.
I was not disappointed when I read the book. Sure, the book is not written beautifully. It's quite simplistic at times but it tells a story and tells it well. There's some banter, mystery and the characters are likable.
I'm not a book snob, nor am I well read, so you could say I'm easily entertained but it would be unfair to give it a bad review because I truly believe it's a good book.
There are more popular authors and books that are way overhyped and way worse than this (not that this is a bad book), yet people love them and praise them. This is exactly the reason I stopped reading reviews of books and movies before experiencing them myself first. In the end it's all relative and dependant on taste and preference. It's far too easy to be influenced in the final decision if a book was good or bad.
Before you make a decision on whether to read this, don't forget a bad review doesn't mean it's a bad book. It means that particular person didn't like it. Just like this review doesn't mean it's a good book. It just means I liked it.
It's a good practical book. Simply written without any unnecessary fluff! I wouldn't have discovered this book if it wasn't for Cliffs videos on YouTube. I found them really simple yet super useful and when I saw he has a book I immediately bought it.
I can see myself using this book over and over again as a reference when styling and designing my home.
Highly recommend it!
