Can we take a minute to appreciate that cover ? The aesthetic, man. Dark skin with light hair and eyes. My favorite combination. It's just gorgeous.
Anyway.
I was hooked from the very beginning. The characters, the world and the beautiful writing made me want to learn more about this story.
BUT. This book actually fell flat for me. It quickly became an average YA book. The only thing that stands out is obviously the West African-inspired world where it's set in which was absolutely exciting. But that's it.
Zélie really impressed me at first and she did continue to be badass throughout the entire book. It was also the case for the rest of the cast. Unfortunately, I didn't feel connected to any of them. FYI this book is told through 3 different POV (Zélie, Inan, Amari).
Inan was supposed to be like this tortured and dark “villain”. But he was too NICE. Ugh. The tension built around his character was... not good. And the romance was completly unnecessary. I didn't like it.
I'm kinda mad at this book. It didn't blow my mind. It was just ok and sometimes boring which is not the best mix. My expectations may have been too high...

I really enjoyed some parts of this book and found some others a bit boring.
Believe it or not, I'm not a huge fan of the '80s. It's not especially the vintage vibe that bother me but more the references that I don't get. And when a book is ENTIRELY based on these references... well, I'm fucked.
The author is obviously really passionate about this subject and I find it super cool. But in the whole, I found it a little bit too much for me. I'm not a gamer and I feel like you kinda have to be in order to fully enjoy this story.
Anyway, I liked the whole plot and the characters, even though I wish I would've been a bit more attached to them. There was a cute romance, moments of tension and some major plot twists that I didn't see coming and it was great. Except one. Because I'm an idiot, I totally spoiled myself for this one. I've taken a look at the cast for the movie and yes, I knew that Aech was a girl and I'm so mad at myself for discovering it before the big reveal ! I MEAN. It's a super cool plot twist. Aech is totally awesome. God I hate myself.
I'M READY FOR THE MOVIE NOW.
I have a few thoughts on this volume :
- So weird to see Gajeel being the big ennemy of Fairy Tail.
- AS WELL AS JUBIA ! Omg the first time she sees Gray, this is THE BEST.
- When Elfman has to use his full power... that scene was so heartbreaking, it's the first time the tragedy is brought up about Lysanna. AWWW. Right in the feels.
FINALLY. I've managed to finish this giant of a book.
... get it?
GIANT. BECAUSE THERE ARE GIANTS IN THIS BOOK. LOL I'M SO FUNNY.
Anyway. I really like Rick Riordan's book but I have to admit that The Heroes of Olympus doesn't seem to click with me.
It's not because of the story?? The characters are all so incredible and adorable and badass and smart and awww. I love them all. I also like the plot a lot !
But damn it these books are so fucking long. I just can't. There are too much WORDS. With the Percy Jackson series, it was the exact right amount of pages (it didn't get over 400 pages) but HERE it's at least 500+ pages and arg. It's just too long, it doesn't fit this type of action-packed story. I need to breath at some point, thank you.
It's like an overloaded bag of cookies. Like, you know you love cookies so yeah great, let's fill this cute little bag with all the cookies. BUT IT WILL EXPLODE IF YOU KEEP GOING SO STOP IT. Put that cookie down, Janet.
So yeah. It's not about the story but more about the length of the book. It makes me lose my patience. I'm sorry, I really like these books but I'm also very conflicted about that aspect.
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT. Nico saved this book by his fabulous and shining presence.
Just kidding, Nico is so dark and emo, I love him so much. Especially when he raises armies of the dead or when he just casually leaves the scene by shadow-travelling. I MEAN. How cool is that??
Little did I know that my love for him could grow even more in this book. I'm so happy. AAAAH. But I'm also super sad for him regarding this new revelation. Unrequited love is really tough. I SHIP HIM AND PERCY SO MUCH RIGHT NOW. I didn't know I would ever say that, ahah. I also really like Percabeth so my heart is divided.
I can't wait to have Nico's point of view in the final book of this series !
I really enjoyed this book but not as much as Leigh Bardugo's [b:Wonder Woman: Warbringer 29749085 Wonder Woman Warbringer (DC Icons, #1) Leigh Bardugo https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1478886078s/29749085.jpg 50105334].I'm not very familiar with the story of Batman (I've yet to watch the movies !) so you won't get complaints about that from me. Also, I think it's important to note that in this book, we follow a young Bruce Wayne that has not yet become the superhero we all know. But yeah, I think it was an interesting take on the story.Unfortunately, it was not a very memorable one. It was very easy to read but the book felt to short for me. It lacked something. The writing is very compelling but there was actually not much to tell. It was a very generic, forgettable story. Other than that, I really liked Madeleine, she was an interesting character. Very mysterious. But also, yes, we get it, she has endless lashes, beautiful midnight hair and deep black eyes thank you very much. I got it the first time. No need to tell me every other times.

When I first saw this book, I thought that I wouldn't read it because it seemed really mainstream YA (except maybe for the concept of time as currency). Then, I read the reviews and they were overall very positive. So I thought I'd give it a go anyway.
It was actually an okay-read. What bothered me the most is that the main character, Jules, is so very clueless. Like she's the kind of character who doesn't listen to people obviously trying to tell her important things. WE KNOW THAT IT'S GONNA BE A FUCKING REVELATION. But no ! Let's just cut off the conversation because why not.
Basically, we don't learn anything throughout the story thanks to her. And so, all the plot twists and cool revelations are stuffed at the end. Yes, it makes for a good ending, but the rest of the book ? Not so great. More like frustrating to me.
I really hate books set in a castle (well, here, it's more a fancy estate) It's so very boring to me. Jules was a servant there and ugh. I needed more action. Or at LEAST some clues about things because the plot focus on a MYSTERY. I love that kind of plot ! But I like it more when we get to learn things as we go and when we get to draw some (a least tiny) conclusions. Just give me something to hold on to !
Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this book. The concept was unique and I loved the mythology. There's also a town kind of outside time and it was super cool.
I also thought that Everless would be very predictible because the way things were described. It lacked subtlety and I immedialty knew that something was off about a certain thing. BUT it was actually okay and I didn't see the other revelations coming at the end. They were a real shocker.
It was so obvious Liam was a nice guy from the beginning. I knew it the second we saw him. Jules was so over the top about him and his brother. I thought it was suspicious. The author wanted us so badly to think that Liam was bad that it was too obvious.I even thought that Roan was one of the bad guys like in Red Queen, ya know. I'm actually glad that Roan didn't turn out to be evil because it would have been really similar to Red Queen otherwise. Even though I love this trope, let's just not abuse it !
Yasss, I finished it right on time ! (just before the new year)
I really enjoyed this book. I love faeries and Holly Black got it totally right !
The characters were very well developped despite the shortness of the book and I was pleasantly surprise. I loved them all, especially Hazel because she's such a badass.
I don't give this book five stars because of the romance. It was sweet but not my fav.
It was an ok read.
This book didn't make me feel anything so that's why I picked such a low rating. It wasn't all bad, it's just that I struggled to connect to the story and the characters. I could have DNFed this book 10 pages before the end and I wouldn't have minded... oups.
Frankly, the romance didn't even made me blink an eye and I found the dystopian background shallow. We have some explanations about things (like why people “reboot”, how the HARC was born, etc) but it was clearly not enough for me.
I prefer the Ruined trilogy by the author !
