An entertaining read that starts as a family relationship drama and veers into American Psycho! It make some think of the movie, Audition, in that you could easily have this book sold to you as one thing before having the rug pulled thoroughly from beneath you!
Maybe the cover art gives the game away a little...
Found this as a freebie in the kindle store so honestly didn't expect much. However this is actually a pretty solid story which takes place in present day with a parallel tale set in 1938.
The characters were fairly basic but I found it well told and it certainly kept me turning the page.
I must say that on January 1 I would never have guessed I'd have read TWO killer fungus tales already this year!
Well here's a book that makes science and Maths interesting. Not only that, it makes it exciting! This is a great read about an astronaut shipwrecked on Mars and his trials and tribulations as he tries to survive way beyond the length of time his mission was intended to last.
The astronaut's journal is really well-written and adds tension, humour and technicalities in equal measure. I did have some issues over the dialogue featuring elsewhere in the book as it felt a little stilted in parts but this in no way took away from my overall enjoyment.

Yep. Another great Charlie Parker read. I love the shadow world and mythology that surrounds these stories with the fallen angels and remorseless killers. This one starts what I presume will be the denouement of Charlie's story by pulling together some disparate threads. It feels like a war is coming and I want to be there!
Oh yes. He even said hello to Jason Isaacs in the acknowledgements!
I really liked this book. The premise is one that could have become silly but Malerman creates a very authentic world and a very real sense of the fear and helplessness of living in such a world.
It's similar in some ways to another of my all time faves, The Road, although possibly not as bleak.
Can't recommend this highly enough.
Like a few of the reviewers here I thought this was going to be a supernatural tale. In fact it's a straightforward thriller but one that's pretty well told.
I did have some issues with following the construction of certain paragraphs to understand exactly who the “he” or “she” in question was.
Nevertheless it was a page turner and the two parallel stories covering present day and 1893 did converge nicely. Pretty solid overall.
