I had not read this prior to seeing the film, but as with pretty much every adaptation ever, the book is superior in my opinion. One has to wonder why they couldn't have followed closer to the story.
That story is really good, as well. Being for the younger crowd, it goes very swiftly and was enjoyed by both myself and my six year old. While I could say that some of the chapters are a tad on the short side, they do work very well - plus I suppose that in this day and age it works to help get young readers accustomed to reading books.
We've started the second book now and I find that I'm actually invested in the characters and want to learn more!
I can't tell you how many times I've read the stories from this collection. Either as separate works, or from this particular set, they have been recounted from in my household numerous times!
My Dad used these books (and others) on tape to help encourage me to learn to read, and I've read these to all of my kiddo's as well.
They are classic, timeless stories of friendship and they never get old.
