I am absolutely astonished. This came pretty damn close to replicating the same feeling when I read The Way of Kings for the first time! I mean, you know, you wish you could read some story for the first time once more, but you can't really forget about it, but then you can a prototype version to read, that's as close as one can get to reliving the same thing again.
Don't read this if you have not read The Way of Kings. This version is amazing as it's own but I can see things that don't really work the way they do in TWOK. I thought I'm not gonna enjoy this, I was like, why the heck would I even bother reading a beta version of the story I loved. Well, it is that and so much more. It's its own book, true you get similar character arcs but it's like a paralel universe. I did decide to read this one after completing Dragonsteel Prime and Aether of Night, both of which were really good too!
Picked this book as a fantasy standalone since I was so tired of getting myself into a big commitment of reading multiple books in a series. Oh, how I wish there was more about Duna and Theonites!
Japanese naming has thoroughly thrown me off from remembering any of the names but still have been able to follow main character arcs. The character development is really good, but I thought that the book lacks a main plot idea. The story was enjoyable and evoked many emotions that I did not expect, while making you think deeper into the problems of modern society (yes, you could draw some parallels).
I cannot with a good conscience give this book more than 2 stars. It very rare for me to like it and dislike it so much at the same time, hence I give it: “it was ok” grade. There were aspects that were interesting about it and I have never learned about the Dune universe as much as with this volume but I found it lacking in the story part, character arc and overall flow of the action.
This volume reinforces me with the presumption that I will not continue the saga beyond the #6.
I can't help but I'm slightly disappointed with the ending of this book. As much as I see it coming, I was expecting it to be much bigger than it was and I wanted to know more details about the God Emperor of Dune. Let's proceed with the Dune Saga and find out where it all leads.
At this point I am slowly regretting reading the Dune Saga beyond the 1st and 2nd book. I am still enjoying it to some extent but I have been let down by thinking this is more Sci-Fi than it actually is.
I do not know how Sanderson does this to me but it is almost as he puts a spell on me to keep reading. I cannot stop myself but to keep reading and find out what's gonna happen. Having said that I really enjoyed this book, pulled me in so and held in strong grasp until I have finished it.
This is Sandersons “subpar” work which is really good. I really like the prototype characters that were later use din the Cosmere. As much as this is not Cosmere cannon book, I think there was a lot of interesting things that connect it to Cosmere. I cannot wait for Sanderson to rewrite the Dragonsteel into a cannon novel and find out more about Yolen.
I was a little let down by the ending, I thought it was a bit strange, some plot twists I didn't expect and also, as usual, I've been left with more questions than answers. It was a however a little unsatisfactory ending to the story.
Very interesting and insightful book from the frontier researcher in the field of longevity. I have understood that it is now just a matter of time when humans will live much longer, perhaps even forever and in good health. This is quite amazing and frankly scary to me. The author has raised many difficult ideas that will accompany the shift in the paradigm of our society and how difficult it will be to transition. I do hope that it will not come at a great cost.
As much as I think I eat healthy and stay away from UPF this book made me question some things I still eat and buy. By my estimation I'm still eating UPF in my diet, but low percentage, which is really good in my opinion but I cannot imagine how to go totally free. Seems to me that I would need to run my own farm and even then it would be difficult.
Eye opening commentary on the problems of the modern societal food habits!
I am absolutely shattered. I was not expecting to be so emotional about this story, having in mind that I was anticipating what's coming, and it was slowly building up, and then when it hit, I was torn to pieces by Shai-hulud, the gusts of wind and sands of Dune.
May thy journey never end even after thy flesh had ceased to be.
What can I say? I liked it a lot. It was a harder read than I expected due to the language used, but I've still enjoyed it. I really like how the movie and book compliment each other (I think that's rare, usually book's better)
There are a few considerations that I can't explain. I normally do not like mysticism or anything to do with religions, but the way it's presented in Dune it just works.
EDIT: After seeing the second movie I am not entirely happy about the changes that have been made to the story. Well, it does work, but it's not to my liking. Still the movie and book are awesome regardless.
Goggins you bad motherfucker. How can someone persevere this much and keep going is beyond me. I thought I was tough, but comparing it to you, I'm so much softie.
Amazing inspiration in anything that you wanna endure in your life. How to change and keep go8ng even if you don't want to. A manual how to forge yourself stronger
This was an interesting listen. I really appreciate that Matthew has read it himself and oh boy I was so thrilled to hear: “alright, alright, alright!”.
I laughed, I was shocked and become thoughtful listening to this interesting story of a man finding what it means to live for him. Chasing his dreams, finding out who he is and where he is going, Mat gives an account of most important green lights in his life.
I know someone who could follow similar path as Mat, but I would not certainly be able to do this. I used to think that my friend is unique but there it is, Mat is as crazy(positively) as my friend.
“Just keep living.” - Matthew McConaughey
When I've started this book I was hoping to understand what alcoholics go through. I was also hoping to understand if I can help a friend that is on the way to become one or he is already there. I'm not sure I full appreciate how this works but definitely have now better understand how much of a trap this is.
