R. Chernow did a wonderful service to us all by authoring this biography of Grant.
I gave it four stars because he droned on and on in parts with the improvable accusations of Grant’s drinking escapades and they added nothing to Grant’s epic history. It could have been mentioned in much less detail and only pushed me to skip those parts.
Otherwise, this is a fantastic biography that everyone should read. Not just because of U.S. Grant’s record, but because of the man he was overall.
I am giving this three stars because what I read wasn’t bad. I read up until the author got kidnapped and was holed up in various places with some others that were also kidnapped. I didn’t finish because I already know how the story ends and i just wanted to understand what happened in the first place on how he was even kidnapped. Once I read that part I was ok with putting it down. For myself, I don’t like to read about torture and all of that if it was even in the book. Not sure and I didn’t have the desire to find out.
This story has so many great elements. I have always admired elephants and now admire and love them so much more after reading how brave and loving they are as described by their loving handlers. I never knew how useful they were during wartime. I feel humanity owes them so much respect and freedom at the very least. So much to learn from them and this book is a great tool!
