Good overall. I do not understand why people compare this to True Detective. Inception I can understand to an extent, but its only similarity to True Detective is the fact that murders are being investigated. The tone is completely different and it just did not resonate with me in the same way at all. This might have coloured my experience reading the book, as this is how it was sold to me (it's even a part of the Goodreads blurb!).

It was an enjoyable read, don't get me wrong, and I found a lot of the concepts intriguing, but it is NOT True Detective. I had some issues with the descriptions at times (a bit hard to understand and visualize), as well as some of the plot feeling a bit rushed near the end. I also think I would have preferred it without the epilogue. However, it was an overall gripping and enjoyable read with interesting mysteries and cool sci-fi concepts. Time travel is hit or miss for me (often overdone and underwritten), but the way it was executed in this book was a unique (and well written) take!

A solid read. It gripped me and kept my attention, but the last 25% felt a bit gratuitous and mustache-twirling. Some genuine emotional moments. Just a bit too over the top near the end.

Exciting, many twists and turns. I did have to sigh at Wax a few times for being naive, but that's just him as a character. Steris remains the GOAT.

Absolute banger. Nothing better for fast paced fantasy with a well thought out plot.

Amazing book. Very well written, as usual. I know SGJ's writing style is not for everyone, but it really really works for me. Probably did not need both levels of frame story, but I did end up enjoying the final layer, even if it did not feel entirely necessary.

Engaging, weak ending. 

I very much enjoyed the magic system in the one. Very emotional. Solid writing. Yes, the twist was a bit predictable and the conclusion felt a bit obvious, but at this point I was so absorbed by the book that it did not affect my enjoyment. Our main character kind of sucks, but that's the whole point. Immensely frustrating to read, but served the story well.

Genuinely jawdropping. I can't fully express how much this book moved me.

It was alright until after the fight at the Allpriory. When that happened, everything just became really really silly, bit of a disappointment after the first book.

Audiobook was good but the book itself sucked.

Couldn't get into the writing. Might revisit at a later point, but the voice of the protagonist infuriated me.
