A very entertaining story overall. The characters are lovable and the humour makes it a very entertaining pick. It's kind of a page turner. A lot is left to your imagination which makes it a very good bedside book. I wish the romance had been explored a bit more but I don't think it was the main point of this book. So I'll rate it 5 stars. One of his best works yet, in my humble opinion.
Dommage.
Well, more of the same, I'd say. The casualty with which the protagonist handles slavery is kinda unsettling, making it very difficult to relate; and the other characters are either too friendly or too evil, no shades of grey, when I thought the author might add depth to the setting that was created in the first volume. About the narration: stuff happens with apparently no direction, it feels like it's going nowhere through the whole book and we're actually following the daily life of a NPC. I don't think I'll be reading through the rest.
Pretty good addition to the genre, and pretty nice book that did not bore me a minute. Now that the initial romance has started, the story and fantasy might loose interest in the next books. I don't know if I really wanna change the impression I got from completing this one, so I might stop there but it was still a nice read.
I've devoured this book; it was short but oh so much enjoyable. I wish it was a bit longer though, since everything unfolded so quickly. But I guess it could have hindered its rythm. I bought it because of its perfect cover and was not disapointed; the brand of humor used throughout the book really hit its mark with me. Somehow, I really related to the main character and felt seventeen all over again. The doubt-then-excitement-then-dread of the first gay crush was described perfectly.
Wow. Much book. Very talent. (Every good book needs a doge reference, and this one has one)
Go read it!
Surprisingly thrilling for a book about a squarish world in which water doesn't flow in an earthly fashion. Max Brook's style and story-telling expertise are probably a big part of this success.
It's Robinson Crusoe, or Cast Away, but in the world of Minecraft. It lets itself be read and never gets boring. Plus, it makes you want to play Minecraft again.
I'll recommend it to anyone who's ever dreamt of physically entering a video game and living its adventures.
The translation from japanese is weird when you're not used to it. And some stuff in the book appear to be ill translated. But otherwise, the story is nice for the amateurs of the genre and the anti-hero viewpoint is refreshing compared to the classic self-righteous shōnen boy hero. The whole “1 girl betrayed me so I'm becoming completely misogynistic” could have been avoided though, since it doesn't bring a lot to the plot. I don't know if all light novels are this straight-to-the-point, since there is little to no exposition, but at least you can dive into it and get carried away to their strange, hostile world pretty quickly.
I've picked up this book since I had never read any of Lovecraft's books before, and I knew how much popular culture was influenced by his work. I must say, the underlying racism is difficult to miss (and hard not to roll your eyes over) in the 21th century. I liked the athmosphere but I guess it hasn't moved me much. The book hasn't convinced me to pick up another of lovecraft's books for now.
I really liked the book and its story, but I felt like the end was a bit rushed. Otherwise, nice story.
