I must be reading something different. Entirely too long, wants for editing. It was tedious as hell and I was seemingly never in the right frame of mind to read it even after sitting down expressly to read. So disappointing because I wanted to love it. I'll try her short fiction at some point.
One of the most beautiful books I've ever read.
A bit of a doorstop, I read this one in fits and starts over a month. The novel is set up as historical speculative fiction and concerns what the world would be like if European culture had been eradicated by the plague. The reader experiences this world through the centuries in the voice of different characters who are the same reincarnated souls.
I wish I could read it again for the first time.
This was a heavy, gripping, depressing read. I honestly didn't know any of this had happened. Never had to read Heart of Darkness for school, don't recall reading anything about the Congo in world history class. Let's be honest, it would have been a footnote at best. To learn the kind of atrocities that were committed there was frankly shocking. This was very well researched as well.
What a groundbreaking book this was. Published before Brave New World and before 1984. So many books borrow from the themes here. I'd love to read a biography of Zamyatin one day.
