Whew.
This is one of those books that anyone who has had their parents pass on should read. It is cathartic, acerbically funny, and true.
I had a much, much better relationship than my mother than Roz did but so many of the passages echo what caregivers and adult children feel when their parents are going through the dying process. Thoughts you wish you wouldn't have, but have to get out else you go crazy.
This was a heavy, gripping, depressing read. I honestly didn't know any of this had happened. Never had to read Heart of Darkness for school, don't recall reading anything about the Congo in world history class. Let's be honest, it would have been a footnote at best. To learn the kind of atrocities that were committed there was frankly shocking. This was very well researched as well.
What a groundbreaking book this was. Published before Brave New World and before 1984. So many books borrow from the themes here. I'd love to read a biography of Zamyatin one day.
Possibly, I even regret, myself, that I have given so few slaps in the face during my life.
3 stars alone for this gem of a sentence.
