This was such a disappointing read and definitely the worst of the year. The first half had a decent amount of promise and really felt like it could have been something, but it just got worse and worse. Filled with exposition dumps for no reason, heavy overusage of the same phrasing over and over again, and just an overall pretty boring conflict left this feeling flat.

I’m not sure that this book really knew what it wanted to be. While theoretically horror, there was very little suspense or tension. The pacing was off, the prose was hard to handle, and the whole ending was just plain tough to read. It felt like a story that could have been so much better if written by a different author who understood horror better.
