Álvaro do Carvalhal was born on February 3, 1844 in Valpaços (Portugal), within a distinguished and cultured family, and died on March 14, 1868 in Coimbra (Portugal) at age 24, while studying Law.
Nevertheless his short life, he cultivated with determination the fantastic genre which still lacks in the Portuguese writing.
Because of this fact Álvaro do Carvalhal continues to be regarded as a unique case in the history of Portuguese literature.
