Kai Bird is an American historian, journalist, and biographer best known for co-authoring American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, which received the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 and was adapted into the film Oppenheimer. Born in 1951, his extensive work focuses on American political history, U.S.-Middle East relations, and the Cold War era. His other biographies include the New York Times bestseller The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames (2014), The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter (2021), The Chairman (1992), and The Color of Truth (1998). His memoir, Crossing Mandelbaum Gate, published in 2010, discusses his personal experiences in the Middle East.
