Well, I think I've never read a book that was both this engaging and this dry at the same time! It's historical fiction written in 1900 and set in 1711 mainly in France, some in England.

I don't know a ton about French history, so it was very easy to get all the characters mixed up, though for those familiar with the subject it would probably be a much easier read. What kept me from adding a star was that the hero was pretty much a set for the last 100 pages, and the two-page epilogue told in a few paragraphs of another adventure which would have definitely interested me. Too bad there wasn't a sequel.
