A Perilous Undertaking

Took me an age to finish it though I cannot entirely blame the book. I only had a minute or two each night to read and they were parts that seemed excessively slow when read in page or two chunks over weeks.

This is definitely a exposition style mystery rather than an action-driven tale and efforts were made to make it more risque than usual Victorian affairs with orgies and opium not just street prostitutes and murdered chambermaids.

That said, it's hard for a modern reader reader to get too upset by the ghastly behavior of the characters compared to current headlines. Maybe the efforts to shock were too great in this particular tale?
