This book is the journal the author kept while living in Greece as a student in 1962, traveling alone on public transportation. The journal aimed to give her polyglot and well-traveled family a close account of her adventures and observations (pages were mailed home when possible), while the purpose of the trip was to visit archaeological sites—especially Bronze Age ones—and to learn Modern Greek by immersion. Using Athens as home base, the author made four long loops: to the Peloponnese, Aegean islands, Crete, and northern Greece. Included are 40 photographs and 12 sketches made along the way.
