Four months travel in the early 1980s though a China that was beginning to re-open to tourism. Dodwell is an off-the-beaten-track traveller, often hitchhiking, borrowing horses or camels, or using the inflatable canoe she has in her backpack (yeah, that is true).
She is unflappable, and upbeat at all times, fearless and prepared to take a risk.
Although a short book, it is written to the point, and the short chapters describe each place in sufficient detail that a longer book would seem unnecessary. This is the third of her books I have read, and I like her style.
