I was hoping the final book of SR would be more like the ‘Annihilation' than ‘Authority,' and it was more of a return to tone. It's still a trifle unsatisfying, since the ending is vague. The reasons for Area X are vague; the experiments of the S&SB are vague. And it seems as if Grace and Ghost Bird will search forever.
That being said, this was far more interesting than the internal politics of the second book. I was more excited. And I actually liked John more in this book, that delicate creature. He's allowed to be delicate, and it suits him better. After the boredom of book two, I was pleased to be back in the fray, to learn more about the Director, to learn about the lovely lighthouse keeper.
So, worth it, but prepare to be dissatisfied. I'm just glad it was better than book two.
