Tidying up the famous yew hedge maze at Aumerle Court was never Pete Carter's favourite job but he liked it even less when he reached the centre. Miss Daphne, chatelaine of the Court, who is surveying the maze from an upstairs window, realizes that death is in their midst. A few miles away death of a different sort turns up on the Bishop's doorstep in the city of Calleford. Here the victim is a rabbit, but one clearly not killed by a fox. Detective Inspector Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby find their investigation has more twists and turns than the maze itself.
