A nice debut story, I loved the fact that it's a standalone. The premise was fascinating with its historical background and some characters who were real people in that historical period. The story was fast paced and had its moments of tension. The author wasn't afraid to kill off characters, but unfortunately I wasn't so attached to them to feel real emotional pain.
I wasn't a fan of the male voice in the audiobook (but that's totally up to personal taste). Plus I was a bit disappointed when the central romance started to bloom. This book was more than ok without it and needed no couple just for the sake of it. Without it my rating probably would have been 4 full stars.
One thing that really bothered me was the lack of resolution during some major quarrels among characters. Only a couple of them had a proper ending, while the majority ended with a lot of untold emotions and lack of proper replies.
