There is just so much to this beautifully written story that it just needs to be read to experience all the emotions.
Jaya is such a complex character. She struggles with what she has been taught to be, what she wants to be, and what others want of her. She is young, taken advantage of by her employer, lands in trouble, claws her way from despair and becomes a strong and confident woman.
Sara is equally complex and surrounded by utterly heartbreaking circumstances. Women back then had absolutely no control, or say, over their own lives once married. If a man tired of his wife, to the asylum they went. Even though Sara was a horrible person at times, it was hard not to feel for her as her circumstances are laid out.
Definitely recommend this one. It's such a great read showcasing women's suffering, their support of each other, the courage needed to make a lasting change, and learning just how deep their strength lies.
Grab a copy and follow the journey of Jaya as she begins life as an Ayah in India, makes her way across the seas to England, and becomes the person she always knew she had locked inside.
