Especially in the case of works that allow a window into a culture of which I am not a part, there is no substitution for encountering art directly, yourself. I will say that similar to poetry, my ability to comprehend and gain meaning from art exists on a sliding scale, but that doesn't stop the journey of interacting with art from being worthwhile. In the vein of a picture being worth a thousand words, attempting to convey all this collection accomplished in a review would be foolish.
That being said, while the amount of stunning, original art in various visual media and materials is dizzying, it's the inclusion of written pieces that really got me.
Particularly:
P. 89 Native Videographers Shoot Back, poem by Allison Boucher Krebs 🤌🏻
P.213-229 Now, You Will Listen: Trust Issues With American Schools and the Care of Our Native Children by Layli Long Soldier (essay with accompanying photographs of physical art project) - powerful must read
p.383-397 Everything Juane Quick-to-See Smith said in her interview about the importance of archiving indigenous art and history. 👏🏻
I'll be gauche and include my fave artists based on pieces exhibited in this collection:
Rose B. Simpson
Meryl McMaster
Jamie Okuma
Wally Dion
Marie Watt
Cannupa Hanska Luger
Beau Dick
