I like how this wasn???t as frenetic as the previous books, and is more about learning how the past was like via Alexander and Zanaya. I also enjoyed their dynamic! Not what I would call a conventional romance, and I???d even say it was toxic and damaging, but I liked how by the end, they???d managed to work things out between them and to admit that they were being toxic to each other. Moreover, that while they wouldn???t and couldn???t change who they were fundamentally, they could at least learn to bend out of love. This wasn't my absolute favorite of the novels thus far (that honor goes to Dmitri and Honor???s book), but I do love the kind of relationship it portrays, how love isn???t always soft and tender, how it can be prickly and injurious, but if it???s real, it???s something you learn to work with, because to love is to care for someone else so much that you???re willing to bend parts of yourself to accommodate them - and to admit when you???ve done someone else harm.
