I remember really loving William Sanders's fiction in my thirties. Would I today? Good news: yes! His dialog is awkward; his characters a bit over the top, too nice or too nasty ... or are they? Nastiness has made a resurgence in the U.S. since 2016, and I'm realizing that those people have always been there but, like the cockroaches in his story The Scuttling, they're just feeling emboldened to come out. (Would that we could get rid of them so easily). So the sweetness that Sanders imbues in his protagonists and his stories, right now, I'm totally fine with.
The stories are a mixed bag, but all of them are thoughtful and thought-provoking. All have elements of fun, some all the way through, but even the darker ones at the end are infused with humor and gentle kindness.
