Well written, but fails to engage in the same way as the First Law trilogy. A simple tale of vengeance, delivered as an Ocean's Eleven inspired team-up plot with a ragtag group of misfits. As in previous books, there is not really a clear good vs evil agenda, but rather evil vs evil. All characters are deeply flawed individuals, driven by egotistical ambitions which can be refreshing, but they never quite reach the heights of characters such as Glokta, Jezal, Bayaz and Logen. We also get to meet some familiar faces which is a nice touch, but no major characters make an appearance. It really is a stand alone book, and feels a lot like an in between.
